NITI Aayog, the policy think tank of the Government of India, is set to hold its 8th Governing Council Meeting on May 27, 2023, in New Delhi. The meeting will take place at the new Convention Centre in Pragati Maidan and will focus on the theme of ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047: Role of Team India’.

During the day-long meeting, eight prominent themes will be discussed, including the development of India by 2047, emphasizing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), infrastructure and investments, reducing compliance burden, women empowerment, health and nutrition, skill development, and the implementation of Gati Shakti for area development and social infrastructure.

The meeting will be attended by Chief Ministers and Lt. Governors of all states and union territories, Union Ministers as ex-officio Members, and the Vice Chairman and Members of NITI Aayog. As the Chairman of NITI Aayog, the Prime Minister will preside over the meeting.

In preparation for the 8th Governing Council Meeting, the 2nd Chief Secretaries Conference was held in January 2023, where the themes were extensively discussed. Stakeholder consultations, brainstorming sessions with experts, academia, and practitioners were conducted to gather diverse perspectives. The conference brought together select Secretaries from the Government of India and Chief Secretaries from all states and union territories, who shared best practices and policy insights.

India, as the world’s fifth-largest economy and the most populous nation, has the potential for accelerated growth in the next 25 years. The 8th Governing Council Meeting aims to create a roadmap for Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047, wherein the Center and states work together as Team India. This transformative growth of India can have a positive impact on the international stage, and the meeting provides an opportunity to align India’s socioeconomic growth with global aspirations.

The meeting is also significant as it takes place during India’s G20 Presidency. The G20 motto, ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’, reflects India’s values and vision for a sustainable and inclusive world. India’s ability to provide values-based leadership and deliver development at scale is highly anticipated. The meeting will focus on strengthening cooperation between the Center and states and forging partnerships to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
