On the occasion of the National Science Day, jointly celebrated by NLC INDIA LTD. and Neyveli Chapter of Tamilnadu Science Forum on 28.02.2017 at Neyveli, Director for Human Resources, NLCI  Shri R. Vikraman called upon the young generation to dedicate themselves to the task of finding scientific solutions to the looming crises in the areas of Agriculture and Water Resource Management.

Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, (Sir C.V. Raman), the world renowned Indian Physicist, on February 28, 1928, had applied for Noble Prize for his discovery after a systematic study of scattering of light by different substances, which came to be called the Raman Effect. The discovery got Sir C.V. Raman the 1930 Nobel Prize for Physics. Hence, February 28th came to be celebrated as “National Science Day” in India. Marking the occasion, NLC INDIA LTD. and Neyveli Chapter of the Tamilnadu Science Forum celebrated the National Science Day today, 28.02.2017 at Learning & Development Centre, Neyveli Township.

Speaking on the occasion, Director / Human Resources, NLC INDIA LTD., said that India was making giant strides in Space Technology. At the same time, there is an alarming global trend of depleting water resources. In fact, it is being said that the next world war could be for water resources. Similarly, the agricultural sector in India is also facing tremendous existential challenges today.  These are the twin challenges that young scientists of modern India should address, he said.  It is encouraging to see that  awareness is being created for studying in Arts and Science Colleges in a period where most of the people are preferring Engineering colleges.  He also exhorted the Tamilnadu Science Forum to conduct State Level and National Level semiinars / workshops on science in Neyveli Township.

Shri S. Mathivanan, General Manager / Finance & President of Neyveli Chapter of the Tamilnadu Science Forum, traced the evolvement of the Science Forum from its early days as a Literacy Movement in the 1980s spreading the concept of “Education for all” to its present day status as a Forum for creating awareness about the development of Science  among school children.

Shri I. Nedumaran, DGM / Education, speaking on the occasion, recalled the occasion that the students of NLC Girls Higher Secondary School and St. Joseph’s of Cluny Higher Secondary School who participated and won prizes in National Science Congress which were presented by the former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and the former Prime Minister of India, Shri I.K. Gujral.

On the occasion of the National Science Day, a grand Science Exhibition was organized at Aurobindo School, Neyveli on 19.02.2017.  Around 75 science models were displayed during the exhibition. Out of these, a model utilizing the light developed during the purification of water, created by students of Aurobindo School and a model of “smokeless vehicle” developed by students of St. Pauls Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Neyveli and another model on protecting the living marine organisms developed by NLCI Higher Secondary School, Mandarakuppam were awarded the first three prizes. Apart from this, Elocution competition, Drawing competition, Short film competition, Essay Writing competition, Photography competition, Singing Competition and Quiz competition were held as part of the National Science Day and prizes distributed to the winners.  As many as 1600 students enthusiastically participated in the competitions and about 100 prizes were distributed.

The Neyveli chapter of the Tamilnadu Science Forum congratulated the Indian Space Reasearch Organisation (ISRO) on its achievement in sending 104 satellites into orbit through one rocket, which is a world record and also resolved to send a congratulatory letter to ISRO.

Shri S.Balagurunathan, Shri S.Ananthaprasath, Thiru R. Damodaran, Thiru Anbalagan and Smt. K. Thamaraiselvi, Office bearers of Neyveli Chapter of Tamilnadu Science Forum,  spoke on the occasion.

Earlier Shri R. Mohan, Chief General Manager, Education, Sports , Culture  & Corporate Social Responsibility, who presided over the inaugural session, called upon the school students to contribute their mite to the development of the Nation, as they had access to various technological advancements which the previous generations did not have.

 Two short films – “The power of ten” and “Comets” were screened during the occasion.
