Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Shri S Krishnan, attended the launch of an indigenous 2KW DC portable charger developed by the Centre of Excellence at IIT Madras Research Park. The charger aims to boost electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India and reduce dependence on imported charging solutions.

In his address, Shri S Krishnan highlighted Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Make in India Make for the World’ and the importance of indigenizing technology to achieve self-reliance (Aatma Nirbhar Bharat). He emphasized that fostering “Design in India” would promote homegrown intellectual property and accelerate the startup ecosystem in the country.

The newly launched 2KW EV charger is designed to address the current dependence on imported chargers that arrive pre-programmed and lack customization options for voltage and current settings. It has been developed by the Centre of Excellence in Electromobility Technologies (CEET) at IIT Madras in partnership with Flowtrik Technologies, with funding from MeitY.

The charger offers several advantages, including an efficiency of over 95%, operation in high-temperature conditions up to 50 degrees Celsius, and safety features such as overload protection, over-voltage protection, and reverse polarity protection. It is designed to meet safety standard IEC 60950-11 and can communicate with batteries for adaptive charging based on battery requirements. Additionally, it has provisions for IoT integration for live tracking of charging parameters and can be customized to meet the needs of different EV manufacturers.

The launch of this technology represents a significant step toward local manufacturing and self-reliance in EV charging solutions, which is crucial for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in India.
