Shri Karma R Bonpo IAS (Sikkim 2010) has been appointed as Director of Census Operations (DCO)I Director of Citizen Registration (DCR) (JS level), Sikkim, Olo Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India under Ministry of Home Affairs for a combined period upto 25/1 1/2027 by temporarily upgrading the post held by the officer from DS/Director level to JS level.
Shri Karma R Bonpo, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, is a highly accomplished civil servant known for his strong academic background and diverse administrative experience. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronics and Electronics & Communication from Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, University of Delhi, both with First Division. Further strengthening his academic credentials, he completed an MBA from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, along with a Master of Arts in Public Policy from Indira Gandhi National Open University. His multidisciplinary education, combining engineering, management, and public policy, has significantly shaped his analytical and governance capabilities.
Belonging to the Sikkim cadre, Shri Bonpo began his administrative journey with early assignments in district administration. Starting as Assistant Collector and later serving as Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Namchi, he handled key responsibilities related to land revenue management and sub-divisional administration. These formative roles helped him build a solid foundation in grassroots governance and public service delivery.
He subsequently served as Additional District Collector in East Sikkim and Namchi, where he contributed to strengthening district administration and implementing developmental initiatives. His leadership qualities came to the forefront during his tenure as District Collector in North Sikkim and later in West Sikkim. In these roles, he was responsible for overseeing law and order, disaster management, land revenue administration, and execution of various government schemes. His work at the district level demonstrated his ability to manage complex administrative challenges effectively.
Transitioning to senior administrative roles in the state government, Shri Bonpo served as Secretary in multiple departments. As Secretary of the Culture Department, he worked towards the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage and archival administration. He later held the position of Secretary, Commerce & Industries Department, where he played a key role in industrial policy, investment promotion, and economic development initiatives in Sikkim. Briefly, he also served as Secretary in the Personnel and General Administration Department, contributing to administrative reforms and personnel management.
