Shri Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan presently Judge – Himachal Pradesh High Court has been appointed as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, born on January 9, 1964, in Tehsil Rohru, is a distinguished judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, known for his integrity, judicial innovation, and deep commitment to social justice. He completed his schooling from the prestigious Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, where he served as House Captain (Ibbetson House) and later as School Captain—early signs of his leadership qualities. He graduated with Honours from DAV College, Chandigarh, and earned his law degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Enrolled as an advocate in 1989, Justice Chauhan began his legal practice at the Himachal Pradesh High Court under the mentorship of Lala Chhabil Das, Advocate. He handled diverse legal matters and served as Standing Counsel-cum-Legal Advisor for the HP State Electricity Board and the HP State Civil Supplies Corporation. His legal practice also reflected his commitment to public interest—he appeared in cases related to environmental protection, waste management, hydropower regulations, and public health, and was frequently appointed Amicus Curiae in sensitive and impactful cases.
Elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh on February 23, 2014, and made Permanent Judge on November 30, 2014, Justice Chauhan has authored landmark judgments and disposed of over 73,000 cases to date. He has served in numerous leadership roles including Chairperson of the Juvenile Justice Committee (2014–2023), Executive Chairman of the HP State Legal Services Authority, President of the HP Judicial Academy, and Member of the Governing and Executive Councils of HP National Law University.
Justice Chauhan has represented India and the judiciary at several national and international conferences, including the prestigious International Learning Exchange Programme in Romania in 2019. He played a key role in modernizing the judicial system in Himachal Pradesh through the e-Courts project and digital infrastructure development. From improving access to justice to promoting child welfare, his career exemplifies vision, compassion, and reformative spirit. His tenure as Acting Chief Justice and Chancellor of HP National Law University further cements his stature as a jurist of rare dedication and foresight.
