Hon’ble Mr. Justice Soumitra Saikia presently Additional Judge – Gauhati High Court has been appointed as Judge – Gauhati High Court by the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint the following w.e.f. the date of assumption of the respective office.
Justice Soumitra Saikia obtained his LLB degree from J.B. Law College under the Gauhati University in the year 1995. He started his practice after being admitted to be an Advocate of the Bar Council of the Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh & Sikkim on 20th September 1995. He practiced in revenue & taxation matters, labour and service matters, corporate matters, arbitration and contract matters. He also appeared in a few civil and criminal appeals before the High Court. He appeared in several important matters and represented various Public Sector Enterprises in several matters. He also represented various departments under the Government of Assam like PWD, Secondary Education, Finance & Taxation, Agriculture Marketing Board to name a few, as well as the AICTE as its standing counsel for a few years. He was the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department for several years for the Gauhati High Court. He was appointed as an Additional Advocate General for the State of Arunachal Pradesh in August 2016 and which he continued to be till his elevation. He was also appointed as Secretary of the Indian Law Institute (ILI) Assam Chapter. He was elevated to the Bench as an Additional Judge on 26.11.2019. Became permanent Judge w.e.f. 13.10.2021.
