Justice Sanjay Karol presently Chief Justice – Patna High Court has been appointed as Judge – Supreme Court of India vide notifications dated 02.2023, in exercise of the power conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India.
Appointed Chief Justice, Patna High Court on 11th November,2019. Presently, Patron-in-Chief of Bihar State Legal Services Authority, Patron-in-Chief of Bihar Judicial Academy, Chancellor of Chanakya National Law University, Patna. Appointed as the Chief Justice of High Court of Tripura on 9th November,2018. Acted as Patron-in-Chief of Tripura State Legal Services Authority and Chairman of the Tripura Judicial Academy.
Appointed Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh with effect from 25th April, 2017. Acted as Chairman of H.P. High Court Legal Services Committee. Discharged statutory duties as Executive Chairman of H.P. State Legal Services Authority and member of the Board of Governors, Himachal Pradesh Judicial Academy. Elevated as a Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, on 8th March,2007. Discharged Constitutional duties as the Advocate General of Himachal Pradesh from 1998 to 2003. Designated as Senior Advocate in the year 1999. Remained on the Senior Panel for Central Government, Supreme Court of India.
Enrolled as an Advocate in the year 1986. Practiced in various Courts, including The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, in Constitutional, Taxation, Corporate, Criminal and Civil matters. Appeared as Counsel in the Inter-State water Dispute (BBMB Project) in the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.
An alumni of St. Edward School, Shimla, Graduated with Honours in History from Government Degree College, Shimla. Obtained Degree in Law from H.P. University, Shimla. Native of Village Garli (First Heritage Village), Tehsil Dehra Gopipur, District Kangra, H.P., was born in Shimla on 23rd August, 1961.
