India’s total food grain production reached record 3296.87 lakh tonnes for 2022-23

The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has unveiled the Final Estimates for the 2022-23 major crop production, highlighting a remarkable milestone in India’s agriculture sector. The data reveals a record-breaking total food grain production of 3296.87 lakh tonnes for the year, signifying an increase of 140.71 lakh tonnes compared to the previous year (2021-22). It also surpasses the five-year average (2017-18 to 2021-22) food grain production by 308.69 lakh tonnes.

Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, commended this achievement, attributing it to the relentless efforts of farmers, the contributions of agricultural scientists and institutions, and the effective implementation of schemes and programs under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

The Final Estimates for the 2022-23 production of major crops are as follows:

  • Foodgrains: 3296.87 Lakh tonnes.
  • Rice: 1357.55 Lakh tonnes.
  • Wheat: 1105.54 Lakh tonnes.
  • Nutri / Coarse Cereals: 573.19 Lakh tonnes.
  • Maize: 380.85 Lakh tonnes.
  • Pulses: 260.58 Lakh tonnes.
  • Tur: 33.12 Lakh tonnes.
  • Gram: 122.67 Lakh tonnes.
  • Oilseeds: 413.55 Lakh tonnes.
  • Groundnut: 102.97 Lakh tonnes.
  • Soyabean: 149.85 Lakh tonnes.
  • Rapeseed and Mustard: 126.43 Lakh tonnes.
  • Sugarcane: 4905.33 Lakh tonnes.
  • Cotton: 336.60 Lakh bales (of 170 kg each).
  • Jute & Mesta: 93.92 Lakh bales (of 180 kg each).

The rice production for 2022-23 stands at a record 1357.55 Lakh tonnes, surpassing the previous year by 62.84 Lakh tonnes and the five-year average by 153.65 Lakh tonnes. Similarly, wheat production for the same year reaches a record 1105.54 Lakh tonnes, exceeding the previous year by 28.12 Lakh tonnes and the average production by 48.23 Lakh tonnes.

Nutri/Coarse Cereals production for 2022-23 is estimated at 573.19 Lakh tonnes, a substantial increase of 62.18 Lakh tonnes compared to 2021-22 and 92.79 Lakh tonnes more than the average production. Total pulses production for 2022-23 is 260.58 Lakh tonnes, 14.02 Lakh tonnes higher than the five-year average.

The oilseeds sector also showcases remarkable growth, with a total production of 413.55 Lakh tonnes for 2022-23, significantly exceeding the previous year by 33.92 Lakh tonnes. Additionally, the production of sugarcane is estimated at 4905.33 Lakh tonnes for 2022-23, a notable increase of 511.08 Lakh tonnes compared to the previous year.

Cotton production for 2022-23 is estimated at 336.60 Lakh bales (170 kg each), reflecting an increase of 25.42 Lakh bales from the previous year. The production of Jute and Mesta is estimated at 93.92 Lakh bales (180 kg each).

These impressive agricultural achievements contribute significantly to India’s food security and economic growth. The Indian agricultural sector continues to thrive and adapt, fostering both progress and sustainability.
