The Institution of Engineers (IEI, India) and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers [IEEE] have signed a cooperation agreement in the presence of the Presidents of the two leading professional associations on Thursday, 13 August 2015 in Bengaluru.
President, Dr. L V Muralikrishna Reddy highlighted the internationalization efforts of the institution to integrate with the global engineering fraternity; and promote the contribution of the Indian engineering community to the advancement of the engineering profession. He underscored the emphasis of the institution on the practising engineers’ perspective to integrate technologies and develop solutions, services, and products for societal needs.
President, IEEE, Dr. Howard Michel highlighted the research engineers’ perspective of the IEEE fraternity, their contribution to developing standards and technologies to the growth of engineering and how IEEE fosters engineering excellence globally to bridge the gaps between the academia, research and industry for advancement of appropriate technologies for the benefit of humanity.
Mr. Ramakrishna Kappagantu, Director, Region 10 (Asia-Pacific) and IEEE Board Member highlighted the long-standing relations between the two professional bodies. Mr. Ramakrishna introduced the efforts of IEEE in collaborating with other national societies and described the IEEE JANS Award (Joint Award by National Societies), which recognizes engineering contribution par excellence locally.
Under the leadership of Mr. Ramakrishna and Dr. L V Muralikrsihna Reddy, the two professional societies have been successful in conceptualizing this prestigious joint award, the IEI – IEEE Award for Engineering Excellence , and the first award would be announced in December 2015. Mr. Ramakrishna elaborated that IEEE Bangalore Section would lead the implementation of all joint activities by the two societies and introduced the IEEE Bangalore Section Chair Mr. A Ravikiran and Vice-Chair Mr. Sudeendra Koushik. Mr. Ramakrishna also elaborated on how the two societies have been sharing resources and technical expertise locally. He also articulated plans for a state-of-the-art digital library to help student community to understand contemporary advances in engineering and technology.
The Presidents of the two professional societies agreed that the synergy will bring about the integration of the perspectives of both practising and research engineers leading to their unified contribution providing engineering solutions for various India-focused National missions, and developing standards and guidelines adaptable to the Indian context.
Padma Shri Awardee Prof. R M Vasagam, Chairman, Karnataka State Centre highlighted the criteria for eligibility and selection for the prestigious IEI-IEEE Award for Engineering Excellence. Prof. R M Vasagam and Prof. H P Khincha, Chairman, Karnataka State Innovation Council are Co-Chairs of the IEI-IEEE Award Committee.
