Hardik Satishchandra Shah IAS appointed as Private Secretary – Prime Minister

Shri Hardik Satishchandra Shah IAS (Gujarat 2010) has been appointed as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister (Joint Secretary level). Prime Minister’s Office on co-terminus basis.

Shri Hardik Satishchandra Shah, IAS is a senior officer of the Indian Administrative Service, known for his extensive experience in high-level policy coordination and executive functioning at the Centre. Over the years, he has built a strong profile as a trusted staff officer, particularly within the Prime Minister’s Office, where he has served in multiple capacities with increasing responsibility.

As per his current assignment, Shri Shah is serving as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister at the level of Joint Secretary in the PMO, with tenure commencing from April 2026. This position represents one of the most critical and sensitive roles in the Government of India, involving direct coordination with the highest executive office. As PS to the Prime Minister, he plays a pivotal role in managing official engagements, facilitating communication between the Prime Minister and various ministries, and ensuring the smooth flow of information and decision-making processes.

Prior to his elevation to the Joint Secretary level, Shri Shah served as PS to the Prime Minister at the Director equivalent level from June 2024 to April 2026. During this period, he was closely involved in coordinating key administrative and policy matters, supporting the Prime Minister’s office in handling complex governance issues, and ensuring effective follow-up on decisions taken at the highest level.

Earlier, he held the position of PS to the Prime Minister at the Deputy Secretary level from August 2020 to May 2024. This tenure marked his deep involvement in the functioning of the PMO, where he gained substantial experience in managing inter-ministerial coordination, handling sensitive files, and assisting in policy execution. His consistent presence in the PMO across different ranks reflects both continuity and the confidence reposed in him by the top leadership.

In addition to his role as PS to the Prime Minister, Shri Shah also served as Deputy Secretary in the PMO from September 2019 to August 2020. In this capacity, he was associated with personnel and general administration as well as cabinet-related matters, contributing to the smooth functioning of government processes and coordination with various departments.

Before his tenure in the PMO, Shri Shah served as Private Secretary to the Minister in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change at the Director level. From 2017 to 2019, he worked closely with senior political leadership, including the Minister and Minister of State (Independent Charge), assisting in policy matters related to environmental governance, climate change initiatives, and administrative coordination. His role involved handling ministerial communications, policy inputs, and coordination with multiple stakeholders.

A brief interlude in 2019 included a winding-up phase before he transitioned into the PMO, marking a significant step in his career. His experience in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change provided him with valuable exposure to sectoral policy issues, which he later carried into his central assignments.
