Shri Dinesh Gupta UPSC (1983) has been  appointed as the new Director General (DG) of the Geological Survey of India (GSI). Shri Gupta is an alumni of the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad from where he did PhD in Applied Geophysics. He is an expert in mineral exploration and responsibility has been given to him to steer GSI in this domain.

Shri Dinesh Gupta has worked for five years in Haryana Ground Water (HSMITC) for Geo- hydrological and Geophysical exploration before joining in GSI, at North Eastern Region. He worked in Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland for mineral exploration, engineering and environmental projects. In Rajasthan, he has worked for mineral exploration, engineering projects and borehole geophysics. In SRO, he has supervised a commercial project costing Rs 1.4 crore for NLC and mineral exploration, geophysical mapping and borehole geophysics projects. Guest faculty for last twenty-eight years in GSITI, AMD, CGWB and DST training programmes, he has been awarded ONGC-AEG best Ph.D. award (1997), MBR Rao Gold Medal (2002), National Geoscience Award ( 2012) and AEG best paper Award (2017). He has worked as an expert on the panel of Ministry of Water Resources for evaluation of research projects. Fellow of Geological Society of India, Indian Geophysical Union and Association of Exploration Geophysics, Shri Dinesh Gupta has been a reviewer for journals of Geological Society, Indian Geophysical Union and Journal of Geophysics, in addition to departmental publications, volumes and compilations and has more than 100 papers to his credit in International, National journals, newspapers, seminars & symposia. He has delivered keynote addresses in various conferences on Geosciences.

He has more than 37  years of experience in groundwater, mineral exploration, engineering, environmental and airborne projects as Geohydrologist and Geophysicist. As National Mission Head 1B, he was instrumental in starting of prestigious project of “Aerogeophysical Surveys in India” and re-start of Twin otter aerogeophysical and Heliborne surveys in the country.
