Indian Bureaucracy News, Agartala, December 05, 2025 | The Tripura government, in its order dated 2 December 2025, appointed Dr Deepak Kumar IAS (Tripura 2022), presently Director of Industries & Commerce, Tripura, Agartala, with additional charge of Managing Director, Tripura Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDC), Agartala, as the new Mission Director of the Tripura Bamboo Mission (TBM), Agartala, on additional charge basis.

This appointment fills the position that fell vacant in August 2025, when senior IAS officer Shailesh Kumar Yadav (2013 batch, Tripura cadre) moved on central deputation as Deputy Secretary in the National Health Authority under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

Dr Kumar, born on 15 January 1992 and a native of Rajasthan, secured 694th rank in UPSC 2020. Previously served as the District Collector and District Magistrate of Kailashahar, Tripura. A medical graduate (MBBS) from Maulana Azad Medical College, University of Delhi, he transitioned from medicine to public administration and has been overseeing district administration, land revenue, and local governance since March 2023.

Tripura Bamboo Mission: Turning Green Gold into Growth

Tripura, a small northeastern state in India, is rapidly emerging as a hub for bamboo-based industries, driven by the Tripura Bamboo Mission (TBM), a flagship initiative of the state government aimed at integrated development of the bamboo sector. Launched in 2007 by the Department of Industries & Commerce, TBM seeks to scale up the turnover of the state’s bamboo sector while simultaneously creating livelihood opportunities for the poor, especially women and minority communities, who form the backbone of rural production.

Bamboo, often referred to as GREEN Gold or Poor man’s timber, is a versatile and renewable resource that can grow across a variety of soil types. Tripura alone is home to 19–21 species of bamboo, covering nearly 31 per cent of its total land area. Recognising the potential, the state formulated a Bamboo Policy in 2001 and subsequently launched TBM to foster cluster-based development, strengthen institutional frameworks, provide technological support, and ensure market and credit linkages. The Mission operates through a public-private partnership model, with IL&FS Clusters assisting in implementing value addition and skill development programmes.

Since its inception, TBM has recorded remarkable growth. Initially targeting an enhancement of turnover from ₹27.9 crore to ₹75.85 crore by 2010, the Mission had achieved ₹56.56 crore by 2009–10 and ₹115.56 crore by 2012–13. With extended project timelines and continued policy support, the turnover target was revised to ₹200 crore by 2016–17. The Mission now oversees 16 clusters for incense stick production, 24 for handicraft and furniture, and seven for bamboo plantations, reflecting the sector’s increasing sophistication and diversification.

The TBM emphasises both livelihood generation and market competitiveness. Women’s self-help groups (SHGs) and producers’ federations are provided skill training, design support, and direct market access, allowing them to balance household duties while earning sustainable incomes. Field studies have shown that connecting local artisans to broader markets significantly improves economic stability, though challenges remain in supply-chain logistics and timely delivery, particularly for remote areas.

Beyond traditional handicrafts and incense sticks, Tripura is exploring modern bamboo-based products such as laminated furniture, flooring, panels, and bamboo composites. A first-of-its-kind semi-automated bamboo wood manufacturing unit in Agartala employs over 100 people and produces furniture and flooring for national and international markets. Innovations such as utilising bamboo dust for brick-making, as practiced in China, hint at the vast untapped potential for industrial applications, which could transform Tripura into a leading bamboo innovation hub.

The Mission also focuses on infrastructure and training. Between 2016–17, TBM conducted 24 skill-development programmes training over 700 artisans, alongside specialised sessions in bamboo furniture and capacity building for trainers. Plantation drives in non-forest areas and homesteads further strengthen the raw material base, ensuring the sustainability of the sector.

Financially, the bamboo sector is gaining strategic importance. The Union Budget 2018–19 allocated ₹300 crore for the development of bamboo across India, recognising its potential as both a rural livelihood generator and an industrial resource. Tripura, with its comparative advantage and concerted government support, is well-positioned to capture a significant share of both domestic and global bamboo markets, estimated to be worth US$ 8 billion annually, with China dominating the current supply chain.

In essence, the Tripura Bamboo Mission represents a model of sustainable development that balances economic growth with social empowerment. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern industrial techniques, fostering women’s entrepreneurship, and linking local production to larger markets, Tripura is transforming bamboo from a low-cost natural resource into a driver of economic and social change. As the state continues to innovate and expand its bamboo clusters, the sector promises to be a key contributor to Tripura’s industrial development and rural prosperity.
