The Central Information Commission (CIC), established in 2005 under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, is the apex body responsible for promoting transparency and accountability in the functioning of public authorities in India. Headquartered in New Delhi, the Commission is headed by the Chief Information Commissioner and supported by Information Commissioners. The CIC adjudicates complaints and appeals from citizens who have been denied information by government departments or public authorities. It ensures that the spirit of the RTI Act—empowering citizens and fostering good governance—is upheld. The Commission also advises the government on improving record management and proactive disclosure practices. Through its decisions, awareness initiatives, and monitoring of RTI implementation, the CIC plays a crucial role in strengthening democratic governance, ensuring citizens’ right to know, and enhancing transparency in the public administration system.
