Anshuman Gaur IFS accredited as Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina
Shri Anshuman Gaur IFS (2001) presently Ambassador of India to the Republic of Hungary, has been concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to Bosnia and Herzegovina, with residence in Budapest.
Shri Anurag Gaur, IFS, is a senior diplomat of the Indian Foreign Service (2001 batch) with an extensive and diverse career spanning diplomacy, protocol, political affairs, economic engagement, and high-level executive support. Over more than two decades of service, he has represented India across key global capitals and multilateral platforms, combining strategic insight with refined diplomatic practice.
Before assuming charge as Ambassador of India to Hungary, Shri Gaur served as the Chief of Protocol of India from October 2022 to September 2025. In this pivotal role, he was responsible for managing diplomatic protocol, state visits, credentials, and ceremonial engagements involving foreign heads of state, governments, and international organisations. His tenure coincided with a period of heightened diplomatic activity, requiring meticulous coordination, discretion, and a deep understanding of international diplomatic conventions.
Earlier, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires at the High Commission of India in Ottawa, Canada (September 2019 – September 2022). In this assignment, Shri Gaur handled bilateral political relations, strategic cooperation, diaspora engagement, and consular oversight, while also leading the Mission during periods of transition. His role demanded nuanced diplomacy and sustained engagement with Canadian authorities, think tanks, and the Indian diaspora.
In June 2019, he was appointed Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, contributing at the policy formulation level. Prior to this, he served as Private Secretary to the Union Minister of Law & Justice and Electronics & Communications (December 2017 – June 2019), a role that placed him at the intersection of governance, legislation, and technology policy. This assignment required close coordination across ministries and offered him valuable exposure to domestic policy-making at the highest level.
His earlier headquarters experience includes serving as Director (Europe West) in the Ministry of External Affairs (August – December 2017), where he dealt with India’s relations with key Western European countries. From April 2015 to August 2017, he was Officer on Special Duty to the Vice President of India, supporting constitutional, diplomatic, and institutional functions of the second-highest office in the country.
Shri Gaur has also had rich and varied overseas postings. As Counsellor (Economic and Commercial) at the Embassy of India in Paris, France (August 2012 – April 2015), he focused on trade, investment, and economic diplomacy, strengthening India’s commercial engagement with France. Earlier, he served as First Secretary (Political) at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, Nepal (August 2009 – August 2012), handling sensitive political and bilateral issues in a strategically important neighbouring country.
At the start of his career, he worked as Officer on Special Duty (Press Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs (August 2008 – August 2009), managing media engagement and public communication. He also served as Under Secretary (Bhutan) in the MEA (April 2007 – August 2008), and as Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of India to UNESCO in Paris (August 2003 – April 2007), gaining early exposure to multilateral diplomacy and cultural affairs.
Academically, Shri Anurag Gaur studied Geology at university and also holds a Diploma in Computer Applications, reflecting a combination of scientific training and technological awareness. Beyond diplomacy, he is an accomplished writer and poet. His published works include Isthmus of Time (Poetry) and contributions to an Anthology of Contemporary Poetry, highlighting a reflective and creative dimension to his personality.
He has a keen interest in cricket, squash, and soccer, and is fluent in English, French, and Hindi, linguistic skills that have complemented his international assignments. Married with two daughters, Shri Gaur balances professional excellence with a strong family life.
