The narrator of the novel, Mohan, belongs to a religious family. His grandfather is of the view that those with the traditional background should become familiar with the modern thought process and the westernized Indians should take interest in traditional Indian teachings so as to have a balanced outlook on life. Mohan gets admission in Saint John’s College where he shares accommodation with Anant who is from a very rich family.

Mohan narrates the story of Anant and other friends, beginning from his second year in College up to about fifteen years after leaving the College; and in between the scenes, the narrator gives important messages of Ram Charit Manas by way of his recitals. While telling the story, the narrator is non-judgmental and he does not pass any value judgment about flaws in his friends.

In this novel, the author wants to promote a balanced outlook on life and to give important messages contained in the Indian scripture Ram Charit Manas to offer a look at duty, sacrifice, religion, and joint family system. The messages have been wrapped in an engaging storyline involving several interesting characters. The messages have been delivered in a simple and straightforward manner instead of adopting a didactic approach.
