Shri Amit Agrawal IAS (Chhattisgarh 1993) presently Secretary- Department of
Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has been appointed as Secretary-
Department of Telecommunications vice Shri Neeraj Mittal IAS (Tamil Nadu 1992).
Shri Amit Agrawal, IAS, is one of the most prominent technocrat-administrators in the Indian Bureaucracy, known for his deep expertise in finance, technology, and public administration. A B.Tech graduate in Electrical Engineering with a First Division, he has built an illustrious career spanning telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, finance, digital governance, and district administration. In November 2025, Shri Agrawal assumed charge as Secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, where he will serve until June 2030. Before taking charge of UIDAI, Shri Agrawal served as Additional Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) from May 2022 to June 2023. His portfolio covered cybersecurity, e-governance, and digital innovation. Earlier, he held key positions in the Department of Financial Services (2016–2022), first as Joint Secretary and then as Additional Secretary. His work in banking reforms, financial inclusion, NPAs, and digital payments placed him at the core of India’s financial sector transformation.
Shri Agrawal’s extensive field and state-level experience further enrich his administrative credentials. He served in commercial taxes, technical education, biotechnology, institutional finance, and rural development across Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. As District Collector of Mahasamund and earlier SDO and CEO in various districts, he closely engaged with grassroots governance, watershed development, rural infrastructure, and revenue administration.
One of the most defining phases of his career was his long association with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) from 2004 to 2013. Beginning as Deputy Secretary, then Director, and later Adviser (Economic Affairs), he worked on high-level policy coordination, digital governance, and economic advisory functions. This exposure provided him a national perspective on policy formulation and strategic governance.
Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles in the Chhattisgarh Infotech Promotional Society (CHIPS), contributing to early e-governance initiatives and IT infrastructure development in the state. His expertise in science & technology, biotechnology, and IT policy is well recognized.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) plays a pivotal role in shaping India’s communication landscape and remains a key pillar of national digital growth. Operating under the Ministry of Communications, DoT is responsible for formulating policies, licensing, spectrum management, and ensuring the smooth functioning of telecom networks across the country.
