Shri Ajay Tyagi IAS (Himachal Pradesh 1984 ) presently Additional Secretary ,Department of Economic Affairs became the ninth Chairman of markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India. Mr. Tyagi took over the charge of Sebi Chairman in Mumbai from Shri U K Sinha, who completed his six-year tenure yesterday. The appointment of 58-year-old Tyagi is for a period of three years.

Shri Tyagi has handled capital markets division in the Finance Ministry. Shri Tyagi has a diverse experience at the Centre too, as Joint Secretary in Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change before joining Finance Ministry in November 2014 as Additional Secretary. He has also worked in ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Steel and Rural Development.

Shri Tyagi is seen as a methodical and a quiet worker and has a good grasp of a regulator’s functions, having  represented India at the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an intergovernmental body set up to combat money laundering, terror financing and other related threats.

He also represents India at the Financial Stability Board, an international body to monitor global financial systems and was the government’s nominee on the RBI board in 2015. The Sebi Chairman’s consolidated pay package is of Rs 4.5 lakh per month.
