What is ECOWAS
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is a regional intergovernmental organization established in 1975 to promote economic integration and cooperation among West African nations. Comprising 15 member states, ECOWAS aims to create a unified economic and trading bloc that facilitates the free movement of goods, services, capital, and people. Its mandate extends beyond economic integration to include peacekeeping, political stability, and conflict resolution in the region. Over the years, ECOWAS has played a decisive role in peace missions, election monitoring, and efforts to strengthen democratic governance. It also works to harmonize policies in trade, agriculture, energy, transport, and monetary cooperation. With a collective vision of fostering growth, regional stability, and sustainable development, ECOWAS remains one of Africa’s most active regional bodies, shaping the strategic and economic landscape of West Africa.
