Shri Anil Kumar Gupta presently Director of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), Dehradun, Uttarakhand has been appointed by Government of India as Non-official Part-time Director on the Board of National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), an Enterprise of Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.

Prof. Anil K. Gupta has served IIT, Kharagpur as a faculty since 1987. Professor Gupta taught various Earth Science subjects to both undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Geology & Geophysics, IIT, Kharagpur. He guided 11 Ph.D. and many M.Tech. and M.Sc. students for their dissertation. Prof. Gupta also taught geology to Civil and Mining Engineering students. He became Professor in 2003 and Professor (HAG) in 2009. Prof. Gupta was Head of the Department of Geology & Geophysics of the same Institute during 2006-2009. During his tenure as Head of the Department, the Dept of Geology & Geophysics excelled in both teaching and research. He had a major drive to develop both teaching and research infrastructure in the Department. The placement and training record during his tenure as Head of the Department was one of the best amongst Engineering and Science departments of IIT, Kharagpur. He attracted several oil sector companies to recruit students; a few like Cairn and TOTAL came for the first time to IIT, Kharagpur during his tenure as Head.

Prof. Gupta’s current research interests include paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic evolution of the Indian Ocean, decadal, centennial and millennial scale changes in the Indian summer monsoon wind and precipitation, Himalayan uplift and Indian monsoon linkages, geomorphologic changes in the Uttarakhand Himalaya, global climates, and role of gas hydrate in climate variability. He is the recipient of the coveted TWAS Prize 2010 from The World Academy of Sciences, Italy and the National Mineral Award 2000 from the Ministry of Mines. Prof. Gupta is the fellow of all the Science Academies of India and fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Italy. He is the recipient of the J.C. Bose National Fellowship of the Department of Science & Technology, and is also the life fellow of the Indian Geophysical Union and fellow of the Geological Society of India.

Prof. Gupta has rigorously published in journals of high repute including Nature, Science, Nature Geoscience, Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing House), Geology, Geophysical Research Letters and Paleoceanography, etc. He has published more than 119 papers with more than 2500 citations.

The above new member joins the existing NRDC board that oversees the overall functioning of NRDC.
