A Curtain Raiser event for Vimarsh – 2023, a National Hackathon focusing on the use of 5G technology for police, was conducted in New Delhi. During the event, the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D), Shri Balaji Srivastava, launched a teaser and the website for Hackathon Vimarsh 2023.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Chairman of Telecom Centre of Excellence, Shri Ajay Kumar Sahu, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Shri Chandraker Bharti, and other officials from BPR&D and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).

The Ministry of Home Affairs, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and with guidance from Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, is committed to building a cyber-safe India. Enhancing the technology capabilities of law enforcement agencies and ensuring cybersecurity are top priorities for the government, considering the critical role of cybersecurity in national security.

The BPR&D has been designated as the Centre of Excellence for 5G applications within the Ministry of Home Affairs. As a part of this initiative, they are conducting a Hackathon focused on 5G technology to develop tools that address the challenges and issues faced by law enforcement agencies (LEAs). The Hackathon encompasses nine problem statements, and the Department of Telecom (DOT), along with its subsidiary Telecom Centre of Excellence (TCOE), is collaborating with BPR&D to conduct the event.

The Hackathon comprises three stages of ideas screening. The first two stages will be conducted virtually, while the third stage will be held at nodal centers in a physical setting, where 5G testbeds, private networks, and labs will be available. A jury comprised of members from BPR&D, I4C, DOT, and the industry will evaluate the solutions. At the conclusion of the third stage, the winners for each problem statement will be announced during the Valedictory Session in February 2024, with an award of Rs 1.5 lakhs for each winning team.

Furthermore, Rs 2.5 lakhs has been allocated for the productization of winning ideas and the development of proof of concepts (POCs) leading to further incubation and funding to create workable tools and solutions for the use of law enforcement agencies.
