Ms. Varnali Deka IAS (Assam Meghalaya 2009) has been appointed as Director in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Delhi under the Central Staffing Scheme for a period of five years.
Ms. Varnali Deka is known for her academic brilliance and dynamic leadership, Ms. Deka has consistently demonstrated a commitment to public service, innovation, and inclusive governance.
A scholar of exceptional calibre, Ms. Deka holds a B.E. in Computer Science from R.V. College of Engineering, Bangalore University, graduating First with Distinction. She further enhanced her management acumen with an MBA in Operations Management from IIT Bombay, again securing First with Distinction. Her multidisciplinary academic foundation also includes a B.A. LL.B. (Hons) in Administrative Law from Gauhati University and a Post-Graduate qualification in System Analysis from IIT’s School of Management.
Since joining the Indian Administrative Service in 2009, Ms. Deka has served in a variety of critical roles across Assam, blending strategic thinking with grassroots engagement. She has been Deputy Commissioner in multiple districts, including Nalbari, Kokrajhar, Goalpara, Golaghat, and Barpeta—spearheading land revenue management, developmental administration, and disaster preparedness. Her tenure as Mission Director in Skill Development and Entrepreneurship saw initiatives to boost employability and vocational capacity in the region.
In Kokrajhar, as Secretary and Director in the Bodoland Territorial Region, she played a pivotal role in personnel administration, IT-enabled HR management, and coordination for security and development. Her earlier assignments in Urban Development, Ayush & Health, Education, and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan reflect her versatility and ability to adapt to diverse policy environments.
