Shri Suvasish Das IFoS (AM 2005) has been appointed as Joint Secretary- Ministry of Tourism for a combined tenure of five years upto 06/06/2026 vice Shri Mebanshailang R Synrem IAS (AM 2002).

The position of Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism is a senior-level role in the Government of India, entrusted with policy formulation, strategic planning, and implementation of initiatives aimed at promoting tourism across the country. Typically held by an officer of the Indian Administrative Service or other All India and Central Services, the Joint Secretary (JS) plays a pivotal role in shaping India’s tourism landscape and enhancing its global competitiveness as a travel destination.

The Ministry of Tourism is responsible for the development, promotion, and regulation of tourism in India. Within this framework, the Joint Secretary is usually assigned charge of specific divisions such as domestic tourism, international marketing, infrastructure development, tourism policy, or administration. Each of these divisions involves complex responsibilities that require coordination with multiple stakeholders and alignment with national development priorities.

Ministry of Tourism

One of the primary responsibilities of the Joint Secretary is policy formulation and implementation. The JS is actively involved in designing policies and schemes to promote tourism, improve infrastructure, and attract both domestic and international tourists. This includes flagship initiatives such as Swadesh Darshan, PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive), and other thematic tourism circuits. The officer ensures that these schemes are effectively implemented and periodically reviewed for impact and efficiency.

The Joint Secretary also plays a crucial role in promoting India as a global tourism destination. This involves overseeing international marketing campaigns, participation in global travel fairs, and engagement with foreign governments and tourism boards. The JS works closely with Indian missions abroad, airlines, and private stakeholders to enhance tourist inflow and improve India’s brand image.

Infrastructure development is another key area of responsibility. The Joint Secretary supervises projects related to the development of tourist destinations, heritage sites, and hospitality infrastructure. This includes coordination with state governments, local authorities, and other central ministries such as civil aviation, culture, and road transport to ensure seamless development of tourism facilities.

Stakeholder coordination is an essential part of the role. The JS interacts with state tourism departments, industry associations, hotel chains, tour operators, and other private sector entities. This collaboration helps in addressing industry concerns, promoting public-private partnerships, and ensuring that tourism policies are responsive to market needs.

The Joint Secretary is also responsible for monitoring and evaluation of tourism programs. This involves tracking project progress, analyzing tourism data, and assessing the effectiveness of promotional campaigns. Based on these evaluations, the JS recommends policy adjustments and strategic interventions to boost tourism growth.

In addition, the role includes administrative responsibilities such as budget management, personnel supervision, and ensuring compliance with government procedures. The JS leads a team of Directors, Deputy Secretaries, and other officials, providing guidance and ensuring efficient functioning of the division.

The position requires a deep understanding of economic development, cultural heritage, and international relations. Officers appointed as Joint Secretaries typically have extensive experience in governance, policy-making, and administration, often spanning over two decades.

In conclusion, the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism serves as a key architect of India’s tourism policy and development strategy. By promoting destinations, improving infrastructure, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, the JS plays a vital role in enhancing tourism’s contribution to economic growth, employment generation, and cultural exchange.
