Subrat Das IPoS appointed Secretary- Department of Posts
Shri Subrat Das IPoS (1991) presently Member (Technology & Estates), Postal Services Board has been appointed as Secretary- Department of Posts vice Ms. Vandita Kaul IPoS (1989) on her superannuation by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
The Department of Posts (DoP), India, functioning under the Ministry of Communications, is one of the oldest and most extensive postal systems in the world. Commonly known as India Post, it has played a crucial role in connecting people across the country, especially in rural and remote areas. With a vast network of over 1.5 lakh post offices, the majority of which are located in rural regions, the Department of Posts remains a key pillar of inclusive communication and service delivery in India.
Historically, the postal system in India dates back to the pre-independence era, evolving significantly over time to meet the growing needs of a diverse population. Today, its functions extend far beyond traditional mail delivery. While handling letters, parcels, and logistics services continues to be a core activity, the department has diversified into financial and citizen-centric services, making it an important interface between the government and the public.
One of the major contributions of the Department of Posts is in the field of financial inclusion. Through services like Post Office Savings Accounts, Recurring Deposits, Time Deposits, Public Provident Fund (PPF), and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, it provides accessible banking solutions to millions, particularly in underserved areas. The introduction of the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has further strengthened its role in delivering digital banking and doorstep financial services.
In addition, the department plays a significant role in e-commerce logistics, leveraging its widespread network to facilitate parcel delivery across the country. It is also actively involved in delivering government schemes, pensions, subsidies, and essential services directly to citizens, especially in rural India.
With ongoing modernization initiatives, including digital tracking systems and improved logistics infrastructure, the Department of Posts continues to adapt to changing technological and economic landscapes. Its enduring presence and expanding service portfolio underscore its importance as a trusted institution contributing to communication, financial inclusion, and governance in India.
Indian Bureaucracy News wishes Shri Subrat Das the very best.
