Who is Shri Shyamal Misra IAS?
Shri Shyamal Misra, a 1996-batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from the Haryana cadre, is known for his extensive administrative experience across both the Central and State Governments. A native of Uttar Pradesh, born on June 16, 1973, he has served in a wide range of sectors including commerce, industry, finance, home affairs, transport, and rural development over a career spanning more than 25 years.
Shri Misra is a B Tech in Electrical Engineering, with a Master in Public Administration (International Development) from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Massachusetts. His training includes specialised programmes at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, and the National Law School of India University, Bangalore.
At the Central Government level, Shri Misra has served in several key positions. He was Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, where he contributed to internal security and administrative coordination. With over a decade of experience in key central ministries, Shri Misra has served in important economic and regulatory roles, including as Joint Secretary in the Department of Commerce and Director (Economics) at the Competition Commission of India. He also held a concurrent assignment as Deputy Chairman of the Tea Board of India, reflecting a wide-ranging expertise in trade policy, industrial development, and institutional management.
In the Government of Haryana, Shri Misra has held several important positions such as Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Transport Commissioner, Managing Director of HAFED, Chief Administrator, Trade Fair Authority of Haryana, and Adviser, Civil Aviation Department. Earlier in his career, he served as Additional Deputy Commissioner in several districts including Faridabad, Kaithal, and Gurgaon, where he was actively involved in district administration and development programmes.
A fluent speaker of Hindi and English, Shri Misra is widely recognised for his analytical approach and administrative versatility. His tenure has been marked by a balance of field experience and policy-making roles, both in the State and at the Centre.
As of 2025, he continues to serve in the Government of Haryana, bringing with him decades of institutional knowledge and a reputation for effective governance.
