Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla is an experienced political leader and public servant who currently serves as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh. Born on April 1, 1952, in Village Rudrapur, Post-Khajni in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, he spent his early years in the region where he received his primary education. He later pursued higher studies in Gorakhpur and graduated with a degree in Law. From a young age, Shri Shukla displayed a keen interest in social service and public life, which led him to become associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), where he served as Sangathan Mantri. This experience played a significant role in shaping his leadership abilities and strengthening his commitment to nation-building and community development.
Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1983 and soon became an active figure in the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh. His legislative career began in 1989 when he was elected as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Gorakhpur Nagar Assembly constituency. His performance and dedication to public issues earned him re-election in 1991. During this period, he served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Government of Uttar Pradesh led by Chief Minister Kalyan Singh. In this role, he was entrusted with several important departments including Basic Education, Adult Education, and the Language Department. In addition, he also handled the responsibilities of the Horticulture Department, Sports, Youth Welfare, and the Food Processing Department, where he worked towards strengthening educational initiatives and youth development programs.
His political journey continued with his re-election to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1993, demonstrating the trust and support he enjoyed among the electorate. In 1996, Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla was elected to the Assembly for the fourth time and went on to serve as a Cabinet Minister in the state government. During this tenure, he handled important portfolios including Prisons, Law and Justice, and Rural Development. He served in the governments led by Kalyan Singh, Ram Prakash Gupta, and Rajnath Singh. In these roles, he contributed significantly to governance reforms, rural development initiatives, and the strengthening of administrative systems in the state.
Expanding his contributions to national politics, Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla was elected as a Member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh on June 10, 2016. His tenure in Parliament reflected his extensive legislative experience and commitment to public policy and governance. On September 3, 2017, he was appointed Minister of State for Finance in the Government of India under the leadership of Narendra Modi. In this capacity, he assisted in financial administration and contributed to discussions and decisions related to economic policy and fiscal management at the national level. He served as a Rajya Sabha member until July 4, 2022, successfully completing his parliamentary responsibilities.
With decades of experience in public life, governance, and legislative leadership, Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla was later appointed as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
