Partnering for years in all major national infrastructural projects, Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) has once again contributed steel for construction of the state-of-the-art India International Convention & Expo Centre coming up at New Delhi. SAIL’s IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) is supplying special quality TMT rebars for this project. The first consignment of approximately 500 tonnes of IS1786 grade Fe550D 12mm TMT rebars has been dispatched on May 14.

Produced for the first time in ISP, bars of this grade have 50 Mega Pascal higher strength compared to conventional Fe500D grade TMT. “The use of this higher strength material will not only provide structural stability to the buildings but will also reduce steel consumption and bar congestion,” said Anirban Dasgupta, CEO of IISCO Steel Plant. The challenge to develop this new grade was taken up by the state-of-the-art Bar Mill jointly with the Quality team through optimization of rolling parameters. The product has been thoroughly tested and has met all the requisite properties like strength, ductility and bendability. Being one of the most modern plant in country, ISP is all set to produce more such value added products.

The TMT rebars will be used for the upcoming International Convention & Expo Centre comprising a convention centre with a seating capacity of 10,000 guests, two exhibition halls spread over 80,000 square meters and a foyer and is billed as one of the biggest in Asia. The project has been conceived as a smart, zero energy, world-class facility designed for national as well as international events like G20 summit.
