The National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), located in Hyderabad, is a premier autonomous institution functioning under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India. Established in 1987 as the National Centre for Management of Agricultural Extension and accorded the status of a National Institute in 1992, MANAGE was created with the objective of strengthening the agricultural extension system in the country. Over the years, it has emerged as a leading institution dedicated to enhancing the managerial and technical capabilities of professionals engaged in agriculture and allied sectors.
The primary mandate of MANAGE is to build the capacity of agricultural extension officers, scientists, administrators, and other stakeholders so they can effectively deliver advisory services to farmers. The institute plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between agricultural research and field-level implementation. By focusing on modern management practices, participatory approaches, and innovative extension methodologies, MANAGE ensures that farmers receive timely, relevant, and practical guidance to improve productivity and sustainability.
MANAGE conducts a wide range of training, research, consultancy, and education programmes. Its capacity-building initiatives include short-term thematic workshops, long-term professional development courses, and customized training programmes for state governments, central agencies, and international participants. The institute also promotes digital learning through online courses and e-learning modules, enabling extension professionals across India to upgrade their knowledge without geographical constraints.
One of the flagship academic offerings of MANAGE is its Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Agri-Business Management), which prepares young professionals for leadership roles in agribusiness companies, financial institutions, development organizations, and agri-startups. The institute also runs the Post Graduate Diploma in Agricultural Extension Management for in-service officers, the Diploma in Agricultural Extension Services for Input Dealers (DAESI), and several certification programmes aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and enhancing grassroots advisory services. Through these programmes, MANAGE contributes significantly to creating a cadre of skilled agripreneurs and extension functionaries.
The campus of MANAGE in Hyderabad provides a conducive environment for learning and research. Spread over a sprawling green area, it is equipped with modern classrooms, conference halls, computer labs, a well-stocked library, and residential facilities for participants. The institute emphasizes experiential learning through case studies, field visits, and interactions with industry leaders and successful farmers, ensuring that theoretical knowledge is effectively integrated with practical exposure.
In addition to academic and training functions, MANAGE plays an important role in implementing national-level initiatives such as the Agri-Clinics and Agri-Business Centres (ACABC) scheme, which promotes self-employment among agriculture graduates. By nurturing entrepreneurship and strengthening extension networks, the institute contributes to rural development and improved livelihoods.
In an era marked by technological advancements, climate challenges, and evolving market dynamics, MANAGE continues to serve as a pivotal institution in modernizing India’s agricultural extension system. Its sustained focus on capacity building, innovation, and farmer-centric development underscores its strategic importance in achieving sustainable agricultural growth and national food security.
