In a significant step towards strengthening digital education infrastructure in the North-East, REC Limited has sanctioned Rs. 4.22 crore under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme for the establishment of 100 Smart Classrooms in 100 Government Schools across the Lakhimpur and Kaziranga regions of Assam. The initiative seeks to transform conventional classrooms into technology-enabled learning spaces, thereby enhancing the quality of education and improving learning outcomes for thousands of students studying in government schools.

The project, titled “Establishing 100 Smart Classrooms in 100 Government Schools in the Lakhimpur and Kaziranga Regions of Assam,” reflects REC Limited’s continued commitment to promoting equitable access to quality education through digital innovation. By integrating smart classroom technology into government educational institutions, the initiative is expected to create an interactive, engaging, and student-centric learning environment while supporting teachers with modern instructional tools.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the implementation of the project was signed on July 2, 2026, at REC Limited’s Corporate Office in Gurugram. The agreement was signed by Shri L. B. Nautiyal, Head of Department (CSR), REC Limited, and Shri B. Vinod Kumar, Director, Indo German Institute of Advanced Technology (IGIAT), the implementing agency for the project.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Shri Arun Kumar Tyagi, Executive Director (CSR), REC Limited, along with senior officials from REC Limited and the Indo German Institute of Advanced Technology. The event marked the beginning of a collaborative effort aimed at bridging the digital divide in school education and equipping students with access to modern learning technologies.

The smart classrooms will be equipped with digital teaching aids, interactive display systems, multimedia educational content, and other technology-enabled resources designed to make classroom learning more engaging and effective. These facilities are expected to facilitate improved conceptual understanding, encourage greater student participation, and support teachers in delivering curriculum through innovative pedagogical methods.

The initiative is particularly significant for schools located in rural and semi-urban areas of Assam, where access to digital educational infrastructure has remained limited. By introducing smart classroom technology in these government schools, REC Limited aims to create a more inclusive educational ecosystem that enables students to benefit from contemporary teaching methodologies comparable to those available in better-equipped institutions.

The project also aligns with the Government of India’s emphasis on digital learning, educational equity, and technology-driven transformation of the school education system. Enhanced digital infrastructure is expected to improve classroom engagement, strengthen foundational learning, and prepare students with the digital literacy skills necessary for higher education and future employment opportunities.

As one of India’s leading Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprises under the Ministry of Power, REC Limited has consistently undertaken impactful CSR initiatives across diverse sectors. Education remains one of the company’s core focus areas, with sustained investments directed towards improving educational infrastructure, promoting digital learning, supporting school development, and creating opportunities for underserved communities.

Beyond education, REC Limited’s CSR portfolio encompasses healthcare, skill development, women empowerment, environmental sustainability, rural infrastructure, sanitation, renewable energy, and community development. These initiatives are designed to generate sustainable socio-economic benefits and improve the quality of life in communities across the country.

The partnership with the Indo German Institute of Advanced Technology for implementing the smart classroom project further reinforces the importance of collaboration between public sector enterprises and specialised institutions in delivering impactful development programmes. Such partnerships help ensure effective execution, long-term sustainability, and measurable outcomes for CSR interventions.

Through the establishment of 100 Smart Classrooms in Assam, REC Limited continues to demonstrate its commitment to leveraging technology for social development and educational advancement. The initiative is expected to empower students and teachers alike by creating digitally enabled classrooms that foster innovation, curiosity, and academic excellence. By investing in quality education and modern learning infrastructure, REC Limited is contributing meaningfully to India’s vision of inclusive growth, digital empowerment, and sustainable socio-economic development through responsible corporate citizenship.
