President Droupadi Murmu addressed the 8th convocation of the Indian Maritime University (IMU) in Chennai, emphasizing the pivotal role of India’s maritime sector due to its vast coastline and strategic location on global trade routes.

India’s coastal strength includes a 7,500-kilometer coastline, 1,382 offshore islands, and 14,500 kilometers of navigable waterways. This maritime richness supports 95% of the country’s trade volume and 65% by value, while also benefiting over four million fishermen. India stands as the world’s second-largest fish producer with a fleet of around 250,000 fishing boats.

While acknowledging the potential of the maritime sector, President Murmu highlighted several key challenges. Depth restrictions have diverted container ship cargo to foreign ports. To thrive, the shipbuilding industry must pursue top-tier efficiency and competitiveness. Indian ports must match global benchmarks in operational efficiency and turnaround times. Overcoming infrastructural and operational challenges is vital for future growth.

President Murmu emphasized the importance of the Sagarmala program, signifying a transition from “port development” to “port-led development.”

Furthermore, she stressed the necessity for the maritime sector to adapt to and mitigate climate change due to rising temperatures and sea levels. She encouraged students to consider their environmental responsibilities alongside their professional duties. Sustainable and efficient maritime activities, including shipping, are essential for ecosystem well-being.

Despite being one of the youngest Central Universities, the Indian Maritime University has demonstrated significant potential. President Murmu praised the institution’s capacity to become a globally acclaimed center of excellence for maritime education, research, and training while expanding its expertise into allied disciplines such as maritime law, ocean governance, and marine sciences.
