Neeta Bhushan IFS appointed next Ambassador of India to Poland
Ms. Neeta Bhushan IFS (1994) presently High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Poland.
Ms. Neeta Bhushan, a distinguished officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), joined the Service in 1994 and has since built a career marked by depth, versatility and quiet excellence. Over the decades, she has represented India in diverse geographies and challenging assignments, reflecting both her diplomatic acumen and her commitment to advancing India’s global engagement.
As a career diplomat, Ms. Bhushan has served in key Indian Missions abroad, including postings in Japan, Bangladesh, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. Each of these assignments came with distinct political, economic and strategic contexts. Her tenure in Japan, one of India’s most significant strategic partners, and in Germany, a pivotal European power, contributed to strengthening bilateral cooperation across sectors. In Bangladesh and the UAE, countries central to India’s neighbourhood and diaspora outreach, she engaged with issues of regional connectivity, trade, and people-to-people ties. Her posting in the United States further broadened her exposure to multilateral and bilateral diplomacy at the highest levels.
At Headquarters in the Ministry of External Affairs, Ms. Bhushan has held several important responsibilities. She served as Under Secretary and Desk Officer handling Japan and the Koreas, where she dealt with a portfolio critical to India’s Act East policy. Subsequently, as Director in the Development Partnership Administration, she contributed to India’s expanding development cooperation initiatives, a vital instrument of foreign policy that underscores India’s role as a responsible development partner.
Her appointment as Joint Secretary (Parliament & Coordination) was another significant milestone. In this role, she coordinated parliamentary matters and facilitated communication between the Ministry and the legislature—an assignment that requires clarity of thought, precision, and a deep understanding of policy nuances. From 2009 to 2013, she was on deputation to the Ministry of Finance, serving as Director in the Department of Economic Affairs. There, she handled bilateral economic relations with Europe, navigating complex financial and economic engagements during a period marked by global economic turbulence. This inter-ministerial experience enriched her perspective on economic diplomacy and strengthened policy coordination between external affairs and finance.
In addition to her diplomatic and administrative roles, Ms. Bhushan also contributed to strategic thought and capacity building. She served as Faculty at the National Defence College, representing the Foreign Service. This prestigious institution brings together senior military and civil officers for advanced strategic studies, and her role there reflected both her intellectual grounding and her ability to mentor future leaders in matters of national security and foreign policy.
Academically, Ms. Bhushan has maintained a strong foundation in economics and international trade. She studied at Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, and went on to pursue Economics (Honours) from Hindu College, University of Delhi—an institution known for its rigorous academic tradition. She later completed an M.Phil. from the University of Madras. Her research thesis, titled “WTO: Glorious Past, Turbulent Present and Uncertain Future,” examined the evolving challenges of the multilateral trading system. The subject reflected her early engagement with global economic governance—an area that would remain relevant throughout her diplomatic career.
Before assuming her present assignment, Ms. Bhushan served as Additional Secretary (Central Europe) in the Ministry of External Affairs, where she oversaw India’s relations with several European nations. Her leadership in this role further strengthened political dialogue and economic partnerships with a region of growing importance to India’s strategic calculus.
She has since taken over as High Commissioner of India in Wellington, representing India in New Zealand with distinction. Her appointment to this position underscores the confidence reposed in her experience and balanced judgement. As High Commissioner, she continues to advance India’s bilateral ties, foster economic and educational cooperation, and deepen engagement with the Indian diaspora.
On the personal front, Ms. Bhushan is married to Mr. Anurag Bhushan, also a diplomat in the Ministry of External Affairs. Together, they balance demanding professional responsibilities with family life, and are proud parents to a son and a daughter.
Over more than three decades in diplomacy, Ms. Neeta Bhushan has exemplified professionalism, intellectual rigour and steady leadership. Her journey reflects not only the evolution of India’s foreign policy priorities but also the dedicated service of an officer who has consistently contributed to strengthening India’s presence on the global stage.
