With the current trend of double digit passenger traffic growth in aviation, the Airports Authority of India is giving a major boost to the provision of Air Traffic Services by implementing state-of-the-art RADAR projects in the North-Eastern region of the country.
A new RADAR Surveillance system at Imphal International Airport was inaugurated today by Dr. J. Suresh Babu, Chief Secretary, Govt.of Manipur and Shri. A.K. Dutta, Member (Air Navigation Services) in the presence of senior officials of AAI.
The new RADAR system installed at Imphal Airport is part of the overall nationwide Air Navigation Services (ANS) projects to enhance surveillance coverage for sustaining massive projected air traffic growth in the coming years over the Indian skies including over North-Eastern States.
A similar surveillance system was installed at Guwahati Airport in December 2017 and installation of RADAR system in Imphal and Automatic Dependence Surveillance Broadcast (ADSB) at Dibrugarh, Agartala and Guwahati will improve the surveillance coverage over all the North-Eastern States thus ensuring the safety of flights operating in India`s North-Eastern region.
The Secondary RADAR system is equipped with one of the world’s latest technology. As per International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards, it is of LEVEL-5 capability which gives the comprehensive and accurate information about aircraft and it can also work as digital data-link between ATC systems and aircraft. The introduction of digital data-link facility further enhances the capability of RADAR systems many times.
AAI in collaboration with the Government of Manipur will also establish an Integrated Cargo Terminal at Imphal Airport. The foundation stone of the terminal was laid by Dr. J. Suresh Babu, Chief Secretary, Govt of Manipur today.
The Integrated cargo terminal will be constructed at the cost of Rs. 15.93 Crores and will be double-storyed structure in a total built up area of 2054 sq.m with a 3200 sq.m. parking area. The project is co-funded by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India and the Airports Authority of India. The work is being executed through MANIDCO (a Govt. of Manipur PSU) as a deposit work with MoU dated 28th November, 2017 with the completion period of 15 (fifteen) months. This cargo terminal will facilitate handling of domestic and international air cargo at Imphal Airport. After commissioning, this Integrated Cargo Terminal will meet the following objectives:
- Fostering of economic development of Manipur
- Generation of employment opportunities
- Export promotion for garments, handicrafts, pharma products and perishable cargo etc
- Liberation of trade within India and among the association of South-east Asian nations.
