Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain, AVSM, SM, has assumed the prestigious appointment of the Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), one of the highest positions in the Indian Army. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain was commissioned into the MAHAR Regiment in June 1988. Throughout his illustrious career, he has served in a wide range of command, staff and operational appointments across diverse geographical and tactical environments. His long and distinguished service has been characterised by professional excellence, unwavering commitment to duty and an outstanding record of leadership under challenging operational conditions.

Lieutenant General Jain has accumulated extensive command experience across the spectrum of military operations. He commanded an Infantry Battalion in the demanding semi-desert terrain and later led the same formation during its deployment with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, demonstrating exceptional leadership in multinational peacekeeping operations. His command assignments also include leading an Infantry Brigade under a Strike Corps, commanding a Counter Insurgency Force and heading a Pivot Corps in the strategically significant Northern Command. These appointments have provided him with rich experience in conventional warfare, counter-insurgency operations and operational planning across varied theatres.

His operational career includes participation in Operation Pawan, one of the Indian Army’s major overseas military operations, where he gained valuable combat experience early in his service. He has also served as a Military Observer with the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia, strengthening India’s contribution to international peacekeeping efforts. Over the years, he has completed multiple tenures in high-altitude operational areas and counter-insurgency environments along the Line of Control and in the North East, gaining extensive expertise in handling complex security challenges under difficult terrain and climatic conditions. He also commanded a Sector in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, further enhancing his international operational credentials.

Upon his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General, he assumed command of a Corps in the Northern Command, one of the Indian Army’s most operationally sensitive theatres. In this important appointment, he was responsible for maintaining operational readiness and overseeing complex military deployments in challenging security environments. His leadership at the Corps level reinforced his reputation as a capable operational commander with strong organisational and strategic abilities.

Following his Corps command, Lieutenant General Jain served as the Chief of Staff at Headquarters Southern Command. In this senior staff appointment, he made significant contributions towards capability development, force restructuring and enhancing overall operational preparedness. His efforts in strengthening organisational effectiveness and improving force readiness played an important role in enhancing the operational capabilities of one of the Army’s largest commands.

On elevation to the rank of Army Commander, Lieutenant General Jain assumed command as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Southern Command. As the head of one of the Indian Army’s principal operational commands, he provided strategic direction across a vast area of responsibility while overseeing operational preparedness, training, logistics and force modernisation. His tenure reflected a balanced approach to leadership, operational effectiveness and institutional development.

In addition to his command appointments, Lieutenant General Jain has held several important staff and operational assignments across various formations and headquarters throughout his career. These diverse responsibilities have given him comprehensive exposure to conventional military operations, counter-insurgency campaigns, high-altitude deployments, United Nations peacekeeping missions and force preparedness across different operational environments. His broad experience has enabled him to contribute significantly to policy formulation, operational planning and organisational development within the Indian Army.

A committed professional and dedicated scholar, Lieutenant General Jain has consistently pursued higher military education. He has attended the prestigious Higher Command Course at the Army War College and the National Defence Course in Kenya, further strengthening his strategic understanding of military leadership, national security and joint operations.
