Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra, AVSM, SM, has assumed the prestigious appointment of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the South Western Command, one of the Indian Army’s most strategically significant operational commands. Commissioned into the 47 Armoured Regiment in June 1989, Lieutenant General Malhotra has built an outstanding military career through a series of challenging command, staff and instructional assignments. Over the decades, he has demonstrated remarkable professionalism and dedication while serving across varied operational environments, gaining expertise in planning, leadership and force management. His distinguished service has contributed significantly to strengthening the operational capabilities of the Indian Army.

Before assuming command of the South Western Command, Lieutenant General Malhotra served as the Chief of Staff at Headquarters Eastern Command. In this critical appointment, he played a key role in enhancing operational preparedness, improving organisational efficiency and promoting institutional cohesion. His leadership in one of the Army’s most strategically important commands strengthened operational readiness and facilitated effective coordination across multiple military formations.

His command experience is extensive and diverse, encompassing some of the Army’s most demanding operational and geographical environments. He has commanded troops in the challenging terrain of the Siachen Glacier, one of the world’s highest and toughest battlefields, where operational excellence demands exceptional leadership and resilience. In addition, he has successfully commanded an Armoured Regiment, an Independent Armoured Brigade, an Armoured Division and the Desert Corps. These appointments have provided him with comprehensive exposure to armoured warfare, combined arms operations and multi-domain military planning across diverse theatres of operation.

Apart from his command responsibilities, Lieutenant General Malhotra possesses rich experience in several key staff appointments that have broadened his understanding of military strategy and administration. Throughout his career, he has worked extensively in operational planning, military intelligence, operational logistics, personnel management, technology absorption and strategic communications. These assignments have enabled him to contribute meaningfully to capability development, institutional reforms and the modernisation initiatives undertaken by the Indian Army.

Widely recognised as a scholar-soldier, Lieutenant General Malhotra has consistently demonstrated academic excellence alongside his operational achievements. He holds two Master’s Degrees in Defence Studies, including one from the prestigious Kings College London, reflecting his deep understanding of contemporary military affairs and strategic studies. He has also earned two M.Phil. degrees in Political Science and Defence & Strategic Studies, highlighting his strong academic foundation in national security, defence policy and international strategic affairs.

His professional military education includes graduation from some of the finest defence institutions in India and abroad. He is an alumnus of the Advanced Command and Staff Course in the United Kingdom, the Higher Air Command Course and the National Defence College. Throughout his academic journey, he distinguished himself by topping nearly all the professional courses he attended, a testament to his intellectual ability, dedication and commitment to continuous learning.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the nation and the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra has been decorated with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and the Sena Medal (SM). These prestigious honours acknowledge his distinguished service, exceptional leadership and professional excellence. He has also received several commendations from Army Commanders and the Chief of Army Staff, further underscoring the high regard in which he is held within the armed forces.
