Shri K Balaji IAS (Uttar Pradesh 2010) has been appointed as Joint Secretary- Department of Telecommunications for a combined tenure of five years upto 27/04/2027 vice Shri Sunil Kumar Verma IRSSE (1995).
Shri K. Balaji, an Indian Administrative Service officer, represents a blend of technical grounding and administrative depth that has come to define many of India’s effective public leaders. An alumnus of Anna University, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics from the College of Guindy with First Class distinction, he entered public service equipped with analytical rigor and a structured approach to problem-solving. This early academic foundation has consistently informed his decision-making across a diverse administrative career.
Over the years, Shri Balaji has built a reputation for adaptability across sectors—ranging from grassroots district administration to high-level policymaking at the Union Government. His recent appointment as Joint Secretary in the Department of Telecommunications under the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, beginning April 2026, marks a significant milestone. In this role, he is positioned at the intersection of technology, governance, and national infrastructure, contributing to policy frameworks that shape India’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Prior to this, his tenure as Director in the Ministry of Home Affairs provided him with exposure to critical aspects of internal security and governance. Shri Balaji’s district-level experience forms a strong pillar of his administrative journey. As District Magistrate and Collector in districts like Meerut, Ghazipur, and Auraiya, he handled multifaceted challenges ranging from law and order to development administration. His tenure in Meerut, in particular, coincided with a period that required careful balancing of urban governance and disaster management responsibilities. These assignments underscore his grounded approach and his ability to translate policy into tangible outcomes.
His leadership extended to the power sector as well, where he served as Managing Director and CEO of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited. In this capacity, he dealt with operational and structural challenges in electricity distribution, an area critical to both economic growth and public welfare. His brief but impactful stint here reflected a pragmatic understanding of infrastructure management.
Earlier in his career, roles such as Chief Development Officer in districts like Ballia and Agra, and Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Basti, allowed him to engage closely with rural development and revenue administration. These formative years helped shape a field-oriented perspective, which continues to inform his policy outlook.
