Shri Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak presently Judge- Bombay High Court has been appointed as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.

Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak, born on 28 November 1964, is a respected member of the Indian judiciary whose legal career reflects a steady commitment to constitutional values, professional integrity, and scholarly engagement with the law. Hailing from Goa, Justice Sonak’s journey from a diligent student to a Judge of a constitutional court illustrates a career shaped by intellectual discipline and extensive courtroom experience across diverse branches of law.

Justice Sonak completed his early schooling at Don Bosco High School Panaji in Goa, where he developed a strong academic foundation. He later pursued his undergraduate studies at Dhempe College of Arts and Science in Panaji, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. His academic curiosity and analytical ability soon led him toward the field of law. He subsequently completed his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from M. S. College of Law Panaji, which at the time was affiliated with University of Mumbai (then known as Bombay University). He graduated with a First Class, reflecting his strong grasp of legal concepts and his early promise in the legal profession. In addition to his legal studies, Justice Sonak also pursued linguistic and historical interests, earning a Diploma in Portuguese Language from the Xavier Centre of Historical Research in Goa. This qualification reflects both the cultural legacy of Goa and his inclination toward broader academic engagement.

Justice Sonak was enrolled as an Advocate in October 1988 on the rolls of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa. He began his legal practice at the Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court, where he steadily built a reputation as a diligent and well-prepared lawyer. Over the years, he handled a wide range of legal matters spanning civil and constitutional law, labour and service law, environmental law, commercial and tax laws, company law, as well as public interest litigations. This diverse practice enabled him to develop a comprehensive understanding of both statutory interpretation and constitutional principles, areas that frequently intersect in High Court litigation.

During his years at the Bar, Justice Sonak also served in several important advisory and representative roles for the government and public bodies. He was appointed as Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government, where he represented Union authorities in matters involving constitutional and statutory issues. He also served as Special Counsel for the State Government and various statutory corporations, roles that required careful legal analysis and representation in complex administrative and regulatory disputes. His work in these capacities contributed to his reputation as a lawyer capable of handling intricate legal questions with clarity and precision.

Justice Sonak’s practice also included participation in public interest litigation matters, reflecting his engagement with issues that affect governance, public administration, and environmental concerns. His experience in such matters helped strengthen his understanding of the evolving role of constitutional courts in balancing individual rights with public interest considerations.

Recognizing his professional competence, legal scholarship, and integrity, Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 21 June 2013. His elevation marked the culmination of more than two decades of dedicated legal practice and acknowledged the confidence reposed in his judicial capabilities. As a member of the High Court Bench, Justice Sonak has continued to contribute to the development of jurisprudence through careful judicial reasoning and balanced adjudication.
