Shri Justice Ashutosh Kumar presently Acting Chief Justice -Patna High Court has been appointed as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
Justice Ashutosh Kumar, a respected figure in the Indian judiciary, was born on 1st October 1966. He received his early education at the prestigious St. Michael’s High School in Patna, known for its academic discipline and excellence. He went on to graduate from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University—one of India’s most esteemed institutions—before pursuing law at the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, where he honed his legal acumen and developed a strong foundation in jurisprudence.
Justice Kumar was enrolled as an advocate on 9th July 1991 at the Patna High Court. Over the years, he built a formidable reputation, particularly in criminal law, and handled several high-profile and sensitive cases, including those involving convicts on death row. His meticulous preparation, clarity in argument, and balanced advocacy earned him the respect of peers and seniors alike. For a brief period, he also served as Government Pleader for the State of Bihar, a role in which he demonstrated exceptional commitment and professionalism.
Recognized for his integrity and legal expertise, Justice Ashutosh Kumar was elevated to the Bench of the Patna High Court on 15th May 2014. Soon after, he was transferred to the Delhi High Court on 7th January 2015, where he continued to distinguish himself with insightful judgments and a calm judicial temperament. He was repatriated to the Patna High Court on 24th November 2017, where he continues to serve with dignity and dedication. Justice Kumar’s career reflects a deep commitment to justice, fairness, and the constitutional values of the judiciary, earning him admiration both on and off the Bench.
