A meeting was held between the Minister of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reforms Institutions of the Republic of Mauritius, Mrs. Fazila Jeewa Daureeawoo and the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment (SJ&E), Republic of India, Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar. The Minister from the Republic of Mauritius was accompanied by H.E Mr. J. Goburdhun, High Commissioner of the Republic of Mauritius in New Delhi and the Minister of Republic of India was accompanied by Shri A.K. Awasthi, Joint Secretary and Shri Mukesh Jain, Joint Secretary from Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD).
At the outset Minister from the Republic of Mauritius expressed gratitude for the ongoing association between the two Governments, in respect of various policy matters and schemes concerning Persons with Disabilities. The Minister from Republic of Mauritius has requested the DEPwD to provide her with the list of the high-end aids and appliances that are being provided by the DEPwD to Persons with Disabilities. The Minister from the Republic of Mauritius also evinced a lot of interest in respect of the implementation of the accessible India Campaign. She has requested DEPwD to provide her with the details in terms of how accessible India Campaign is being implemented for Persons with Disabilities. The Minister from the Republic of Mauritius informed the Minister of State for SJ&E about the current reservation policy that is being followed in the Republic of Mauritius in respect of Persons with Disabilities. She mentioned that at present there is only 2% reservation for Persons with disabilities and this reservation is only there in the private sector. She sought help in terms of the experience of the Government of India in implementing reservation for Persons with Disabilities in the Government sector, in view of the fact that the Government of the Republic of Mauritius is keen to extend the reservation in the Government sector as well.
The Minister from the Republic of Mauritius also held a detailed discussion on the new Bill for Persons with Disabilities that has been introduced in the Parliament. She mentioned that there is no such exclusive law in Mauritius dealing exclusively with Persons with Disabilities. The Minister from Mauritius mentioned that the Government of Mauritius now intends to bring such a law dealing exclusively the Rights of the Persons with Disabilities and she has sought the help of the Government of India in bringing about such a law in Mauritius. The meeting concluded with both sides reiterating their intentions to benefit each other in matter of programmes and policies based on the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
