Dr. Tapas Ganguli presently posted as Outstanding Scientist, Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore has been posted as Director- Institute of Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

The Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), a premier research institute in India, traces its origins to the early 1970s when foundational work in plasma physics began at the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad. Initially focused on space plasma phenomena, these efforts led to studies on E x B instabilities, cometary plasma-solar wind interactions, and ion acoustic waves—laying the groundwork for a future in fusion research.

By 1982, with strong support from the Government of India and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Plasma Physics Programme (PPP) was formally launched, marking India’s entry into high-temperature plasma research. The PPP’s most ambitious project, the ADITYA tokamak, was designed and engineered during this period. In 1984, the activities shifted to a dedicated campus in Bhat village, near Ahmedabad, and by 1986, PPP had evolved into the autonomous Institute for Plasma Research.

The commissioning of ADITYA in 1989 enabled extensive tokamak experiments. IPR soon established itself as a center of excellence in edge turbulence, plasma transport, and computational plasma research. With the 1995 decision to build the superconducting steady-state tokamak (SST-1) for 1000-second operations, the institute experienced rapid growth and came under the administrative purview of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). This phase saw expansion into pulsed power, diagnostics, RF systems, and industrial plasma applications.

In 1998, the Facilitation Centre for Industrial Plasma Technologies (FCIPT) was established as a separate entity in Gandhinagar to foster industry collaboration. Today, IPR stands internationally recognized for its pioneering research in plasma science. With a dedicated scientific and engineering team of over 200, IPR continues to lead advancements in plasma-based technologies, from clean energy to industrial innovation, affirming its role as a pillar of India’s scientific progress.
