The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, in consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and various stakeholders, has identified key products for the notification of Quality Control Orders (QCOs). This initiative has resulted in the development of over 60 new QCOs, covering 318 product standards, including nine standards related to copper products. The QCO for Copper Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023 was notified on October 20, 2023.

The QCO for Copper Products includes standards related to various copper products used in electrical applications, plumbing, construction, power generation, power transmission, telecommunications, and more. These standards ensure the quality and purity of copper products, addressing the need for maintaining high-quality standards in various industries.

The implementation of QCOs is part of the government’s efforts to establish a quality control regime in the country for the industrial sectors under its domain, in collaboration with BIS, industry stakeholders, and other partners. These orders aim to improve manufacturing quality standards, enhance the reputation of “Made in India” products, and contribute to the ethos of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).

QCOs are intended to enhance the quality of domestically manufactured products, prevent the import of sub-standard products, and protect consumers, human, animal, and plant health, and the environment from unfair trade practices. The QCOs are also designed to promote Ease of Doing Business and provide relaxations to small and micro industries.

With the implementation of QCOs, the manufacturing, storage, and sale of non-BIS certified products will be prohibited, and violations can result in penalties, including imprisonment and fines, as per the BIS Act, 2016. These initiatives align with the government’s vision of creating an “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” by producing world-class products of good quality in India. The Copper Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023 is a significant step in this direction.
