The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, observed World Schizophrenia Day to raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness, particularly schizophrenia. The DEPwD is responsible for addressing the development needs of persons with disabilities in India.

To create awareness about schizophrenia among the public, the department organized various events at more than 30 locations across India. These activities included:

  1. Awareness & Sensitization Sessions: Sessions were conducted to raise awareness and sensitize people about schizophrenia.
  2. Special audio-video and radio programs and panel discussions: Experts participated in programs and discussions to provide insights into schizophrenia. These programs were broadcasted through audio, video, and radio platforms.
  3. Street plays, poster making, and quiz competitions: Creative activities such as street plays, poster making, and quiz competitions were organized to engage the public and promote understanding of schizophrenia.
  4. Webinars: Webinars focused on early intervention in schizophrenia from the perspectives of psychologists and psychiatrists were conducted.
  5. Distribution of Teaching-Learning Material (TLM): Teaching-learning materials related to schizophrenia were distributed to children with intellectual disabilities.
  6. Short-term Training Programs: A training program was held to educate participants about the early symptoms of schizophrenia and its management.
  7. Display of vocational stalls: Stalls were set up to showcase products made by individuals with schizophrenia, highlighting their vocational skills.
  8. Skit about awareness on schizophrenia: A skit was performed to raise awareness and educate the audience about schizophrenia.
  9. Medical Camp: A medical camp was organized to provide healthcare services related to schizophrenia.

These activities aimed to increase public understanding of schizophrenia and promote inclusivity and support for individuals living with the condition.
