Fast rising cases of dengue and chikungunya have lead to a sharp increase of demand for mosquito repellents and insecticides by 45-50 per cent in the last few weeks and the sale of these products is likely to further shoot up on health concerns arising out of water logging and lack of adequate sanitation in major cities, more so in the North including the National Capital Region, according to an ASSOCHAM quick survey.
The survey done by a field research showed the maximum rise in sale of mosquito repellent was noticed in Delhi, followed by other northern cities. Preventive measures including sprays, coils, liquid electric machines, mats, agarbatti and creams are also in great demand. “There is a high demand for all types of insecticides. The sale of coils and mats has more than doubled and there is a significant increase in sale of mosquito repellent creams such as Odomos”.
“It is a pity that the sanitation standards as also the drainage system are so inadequate that year after year, the problem of preventable diseases is only increasing, ” ASSOCHAM Secretary General Mr D S Rawat said. He said local bodies, state governments and the Centre should tackle this problem in a well-coordinated manner to mitigate the effects.
Mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya have been multiplying in various parts of the country at an alarming rate. There is a demand for canned mosquito repellent sprays over creams by pointing out the concentrated spots in the vicinity that are infested with mosquitoes, adds the shopkeers.
Due to increase awareness regarding vector borne disease, the demand for mosquito repellent products like coils, strips, liquid vaporizers, etc are rising than before, thereby providing high momentum to the Indian Mosquito repellent market.
India Mosquito Repellent Market has been growing with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 5% for last five years but bulk of the demand arises between July – November and then March and April months. The demand is projected to reach new heights by the year 2021 due to rising incidence of vector borne disease in India and growing awareness regarding prevention of mosquitoes. The various formats such as coils, mats, liquid vaporizers, sprays, creams, lotions, etc are driving the segmental market of mosquito repellent market in India.
As the mosquito repellent segment saw increasing demand, the advertising spends during the period have also been going up. The demand for smokeless coils has also doubled in the last two weeks.
Mosquito repellent creams are selling like hot cakes. Apart from mosquito repellents, there is a surge in drainage cleaning products like DDT powder and acids, add the respondents.
