The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) is soon going to set up a dedicated robotics laboratory with the focus on use of robotic tools for surveillance, search and rescue, mine detection and offensive operations by the armed forces.

The lab would be functional within 15 days, said scientists of the DIAT, while speaking on the sidelines of Robotryst-2016, a Robotics workshop and championship that was inaugurated . Over 200 students from across India are participating in the four-day event. The mechanical engineering department of the DIAT has launched a specialised course in robotics this year.

A Kumarswamy, head of the department of mechanical engineering, said, “The focus of the work done in robotics would be focused on the needs of our armed forces. At present, all three of our armed forces make use of robotic technology in some way or the other. The aim of this lab would be conduct advanced research in terms of mechanical parts, electronics and other cognitive features.”

A scientist of DIAT said, “Robots find a wide range of applications for the military specially in modern warfare. Some robots are used in operations in hazardous environments for fire-fighting, entering into dangerous zones and for rescuing injured people during natural disasters. Another important application of robots in security includes inspection and detection of explosives. Robots are also used for mine removal. Drones are used for surveillance and airline attacks. Robotised tanks and remote-controlled firearms are currently being developed by various armed forces including India. Underwater unmanned vehicles are key to study oceans and naval surveillance.”
