NLC India, the Powerhouse of South India, has, from its inception, practised the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by undertaking activities that improved the lives of the underprivileged and socio economically backward.

The evolving framework of a comprehensive CSR drawn up by the Government of India over the years has only spurred NLC India to be more effective in bringing in new policies and social outreach initiatives for the developmental activities. The catalyst for this has undoubtedly been its Chairman and Managing Director, Dr.S.K. Acharya, whose enthusiasm and innovative ideas have galvanised and captured the imagination of the NLCIL fraternity for doing good for the greater society.

Under his guidance, NLCIL has drawn up a CSR narrative which encompasses the entire gamut of socio economic development.   New schemes have been formulated for the betterment and well being of the people living mostly in peripheral areas/States where NLCIL has its operational presence.

Dr. Acharya has been instrumental for innovative schemes like – JAL PARYAPTH under which water augmentation activities are taken up by de-silting and improving storage positions of water reservoirs, lakes and ponds in and around. Through JAL DHARA Scheme, clean drinking water and buttermilk are provided to the public in the summer and Water Purifier RO Plants are getting installed in heritage and pilgrimage sites like Chidambaram, Vridhachalam, Tirupathi, Puri and Velankanni and also in resettlement areas in Neyveli with plans for providing the same facilities in the areas where NLCIL has its presence.  He has introduced JAL UDAY Scheme, under which Water Harvesting including aquaculture and planting of trees have been taken up with a view to improve the biosphere, water recycling and to promote biodiversity.

The dynamic CMD, Dr. Acharya, has also envisioned a special care for Sneha Opportunity Services, a centre for special children, DIVYANGS, wherein 85 special children are reared, given education and imparted vocational skills to enable them to live a dignified life. He also is bringing up an old age retirees home in Neyveli to help senior citizens in need of shelter and care.

NLC India has a rich heritage of an efficient educational system imparting education to the needy and underprivileged children of the peripheral villages. Building on this, Dr. S.K. Acharya, CMD, came up with TALEEM, a scheme which augments the educational base by providing infrastructural and financial support to educational institutions in Neyveli and in Barsingsar, Rajasthan for providing quality education.

Under the ILAAJ scheme that he has brought in, NLC India provides quality medical treatment and occupational health services to the inhabitants of Neyveli Township and its surrounding villages.  In 2016-17 alone, free medical consultation was extended in 5, 33,616 cases to out-patients including those from the rural public. Under STREE SASHAKTIKARAN Scheme, activities like tailoring, driving, computer learning, embroidery etc., are undertaken for empowering women with skills for economic and social independence.

In line with the Swachh Bharat Mission initiative of the Government of India, NLC India constructed 1412 toilets in schools in various parts of the country.  Partnering Skill India Mission, apart from regular training provided to around 370 youth every year by NLCIL, as a special initiative, a course on ‘Mining Diploma’ has been started for local youth in association with Annamalai University, Tamilnadu.

Reinforcing all the good deeds that NLCIL is doing as a Corporate Business Entity with its extensive social outreach under his dynamic leadership, Dr.Acharya continues his mission from ‘wealth to wellbeing’ for benefit of larger society.
