Shri Ashutosh Jindal IAS (Tripura 1995) has been empanelled as Secretary at the Centre.
Shri Ashutosh Jindal, a distinguished officer of the Indian Administrative Service, has built a notable career in public administration marked by policy depth, international exposure, and a broad range of experience across economic, financial, and governance sectors. Over the years, he has served in several key assignments both within India and abroad, contributing to policy formulation, administrative coordination, and economic diplomacy.
Academically, Shri Jindal possesses a strong interdisciplinary background. He holds a postgraduate degree in Economics, securing First Class, which provides him with a solid foundation in economic policy and governance. Earlier, he completed his Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics with First Class with Distinction, demonstrating technical excellence early in his academic career. Further enriching his academic credentials, he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights from Indira Gandhi National Open University, reflecting his interest in emerging areas of economic governance and knowledge management. This combination of engineering, economics, and legal awareness has contributed to his balanced and analytical approach to public policy.
Currently, Shri Ashutosh Jindal is serving as Minister (Economic) at the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. In this important diplomatic assignment, which began in September 2024, he is engaged with matters related to economic affairs, financial cooperation, and policy dialogue between India and the United States. The position plays a crucial role in strengthening economic engagement and facilitating discussions on global financial issues, trade, and investment.
Prior to this international assignment, Shri Jindal served in the Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India as Additional Secretary from December 2021 to July 2024. In this capacity, he was associated with high-level administrative coordination across ministries and departments, contributing to the smooth functioning of the government’s decision-making processes. Earlier, he served as Joint Secretary in the same institution from November 2019 to December 2021, where he handled significant administrative responsibilities and policy coordination tasks.
Before his tenure in the Cabinet Secretariat, Shri Jindal worked as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas between 2015 and 2019. In this role, he was involved in matters concerning the petroleum sector, which is central to India’s energy security and economic growth. His work during this period contributed to policy management and administrative oversight within one of the country’s most strategically important sectors.
At the state level, Shri Jindal has held several senior leadership roles in the Government of Tripura. He served as Secretary in the Finance Department, as well as Secretary in the Tourism Department and the Urban Development Authority, where he was involved in strengthening financial management, promoting tourism development, and supporting urban planning initiatives. His tenure also included serving as Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura, a position that involved overseeing electoral processes and ensuring the smooth conduct of elections in the state. In addition, he served as Resident Commissioner of Tripura, facilitating coordination between the state government and central authorities.
Shri Jindal’s career also includes important international exposure. Between 2008 and 2011, he served as Adviser (Information and Engineering) in the Embassy of India in Brussels under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. In this role, he was associated with trade and commercial engagement, strengthening India’s economic interface with European institutions and businesses.
Earlier in his career, he worked in the Government of India in the Ministry of Finance as Private Secretary in the Department of Financial Services and also held positions in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, including Deputy Secretary and Joint Director General in the Foreign Trade division. These roles provided him with valuable experience in financial sector administration and international trade policy.
At the district and field level, Shri Jindal served as District Collector and District Magistrate of West Tripura, where he was responsible for district administration, development programmes, and public service delivery. His earlier assignments also included serving as Additional District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Officer, and Director in the Information Technology Department, where he contributed to early efforts in strengthening digital governance in the state.
Over the course of nearly three decades in public service, Shri Ashutosh Jindal has demonstrated a thoughtful and balanced administrative approach, combining economic insight with practical governance experience. His career reflects a consistent engagement with policy, administration, and international cooperation, making him one of the experienced officers contributing to India’s evolving governance and economic diplomacy landscape.
