Shri Ajaneesh Kumar IFS (1996) presently Ambassador of India to Argentina, has been concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, with residence in Buenos Aires.
Shri Ajaneesh Kumar, a distinguished officer of the Indian Foreign Service from the 1996 batch, currently serves as India’s Ambassador to the Argentine Republic. In addition, he has been concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, with residence in Buenos Aires. A career diplomat with over 28 years of rich experience in foreign policy and international engagement, Shri Kumar has served India with commitment across diverse geopolitical landscapes.
Mr. Kumar began his diplomatic journey shortly after joining the IFS, undertaking his first foreign posting in Mexico City as Third Secretary/Second Secretary from August 1998 to October 2001. This was followed by his tenure as First Secretary at the Embassy of India in Buenos Aires, Argentina from January 2002 to May 2005, a posting that laid the foundation for his long-standing engagement with Latin America.
He went on to serve in Berne, Switzerland as First Secretary and later Counsellor from November 2007 to May 2012. His contributions during this period further strengthened India’s bilateral relations with Switzerland and the broader European region. Thereafter, he was appointed Deputy High Commissioner of India to Accra, Ghana, from July 2012 to June 2015, where he played a proactive role in enhancing India’s presence and partnerships in West Africa.
At headquarters in New Delhi, Shri Kumar held several key roles, including postings in the Technical Cooperation Division (later renamed Development Partnership Administration), Europe West Division, and the United Nations (Political) Division. His responsibilities involved policy formulation, multilateral coordination, and managing developmental cooperation projects with partner countries.
From July 2015 to December 2018, Shri Kumar served as Deputy Director General at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), New Delhi. During this tenure, he was actively involved in Track 1.5 and Track 2 diplomacy, working closely with ICWA’s international partners across regions such as Russia, China, Central Asia, Latin America, and Africa. His role in shaping dialogue and research-based diplomatic engagement was widely recognized.
In December 2018, Shri Kumar was appointed as India’s High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, a post he held until January 2022. He then assumed the position of Ambassador of India to the Republic of Estonia on 11 March 2022, continuing his tradition of effective representation and engagement on behalf of India.
An alumnus with academic credentials in both Physics and Law, Shri Kumar combines analytical acumen with legal and diplomatic insight. He is proficient in Hindi, English, and Spanish—languages that have proven valuable in his Latin American and international postings.
