Air Marshal Sadhna S Nair has made history by becoming the first woman to hold the position of Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces) on promotion to the rank of Air Marshal. She assumed this appointment in the office of the DGAFMS on October 23, 2023. Prior to this prestigious appointment, Air Marshal Sadhna S Nair served as the Principal Medical Officer (PMO) at HQ Training Command (Air Force) in Bangalore.
Air Marshal Sadhna S Nair is a graduate of the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune. She was commissioned into the Indian Air Force in December 1985 and has had a distinguished career. She holds a postgraduate degree in Family Medicine and has completed a two-year training program in Medical Informatics at AIIMS, New Delhi. She has also received specialized training in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Warfare with the Israeli Defence Forces and in Military Medical Ethics in Switzerland.
Notably, Air Marshal Sadhna S Nair is the first and only woman to have held the position of Principal Medical Officer in Western Air Command and Training Command. Her career has been marked by meritorious service, earning her awards such as the AOC-in-C (WAC) and CAS Commendations. She has also been honored with the Vishisht Seva Medal by the President of India.
It’s worth mentioning that Air Marshal Sadhna S Nair hails from a family with a deep-rooted tradition of service in the Indian Air Force, spanning three generations over the last seven decades. Her remarkable achievements and contributions serve as an inspiration to many, especially women, in the field of defense and medical services.
