Shri Adil Zainulbhai is the Chairman of the Capacity Building Commission of India, a body established by the Honourable Prime Minister in 2021 to strengthen the capacity and effectiveness of the Indian Civil Services. He has been a key figure in India’s institutional reform landscape and was recently granted an extension as Chairperson of the Commission from 1st May 2025 to 31st July 2025. Prior to this, he served as Chairman of the Quality Council of India, where he was instrumental in promoting quality standards across diverse sectors.

A seasoned management expert, Shri Zainulbhai retired in 2014 as Chairman of McKinsey & Company, India, after an illustrious 34-year career. The last ten years of his McKinsey tenure were spent in India, where he advised top business leaders, promoters, and public sector executives. Earlier, he led McKinsey’s Washington, D.C. office and founded its Minneapolis office, establishing a global footprint in strategic consulting.

During his time in India, Shri Zainulbhai has worked closely with leading Indian and multinational corporations, including both private enterprises and public sector undertakings. His insights into strategic leadership, transformation, and governance have been widely recognized and respected.

He is the co-editor of the acclaimed book Reimagining India, a collection of essays by over 60 thought leaders—ranging from business magnates to academics and journalists. The book topped India’s non-fiction charts upon release and ranked #2 on Amazon’s International Business List in the United States.

Shri Zainulbhai currently serves on the Boards of Reliance Industries Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Network18, Cipla, and the Piramal Foundation. He also chairs the Board of Governors at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar.

Born and raised in Bombay, he holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Deeply committed to social and community causes, Shri Zainulbhai also finds time to pursue his passion for sailing in the Mumbai harbour.
