Abhishek Singh IFS concurrently accredited as Ambassador to Benin
Shri Abhishek Singh IFS (2003) presently High Commissioner of India to the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Benin, with residence in Abuja.
Ambassador Abhishek Singh assumed charge as the High Commissioner of India to Nigeria on 9 October 2025, bringing with him more than two decades of rich diplomatic experience across bilateral, multilateral, political, and economic domains. His appointment is being viewed as a significant step in further strengthening India–Nigeria relations, particularly in the areas of trade, energy cooperation, defence, and people-to-people engagement.
Prior to taking up his current assignment in Abuja, Ambassador Singh served as the Ambassador of India to Venezuela from August 2020 to July 2023. His tenure in Caracas coincided with a challenging global and regional environment, during which he played an important role in sustaining diplomatic engagement, protecting Indian interests, and supporting the Indian diaspora. His ability to navigate complex political and economic circumstances earned him recognition within diplomatic circles and featured prominently in Latest Indian Bureaucracy News relating to overseas missions.
At the Ministry of External Affairs headquarters, Ambassador Singh held the key position of Joint Secretary (Economic Diplomacy & Multilateral Economic Relations) during 2023–2025. In this capacity, he was deeply involved in shaping India’s economic diplomacy and multilateral engagement. Notably, he served as India’s Sous-Sherpa for major global and plurilateral forums including G20, G7, BRICS, IBSA, and ACD, contributing to policy coordination, negotiations, and strategic positioning of India on global economic issues. Alongside this, he served as Director/Member on the Boards and Committees of important institutions such as India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), Invest India, and the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), reflecting his strong engagement with trade promotion and investment facilitation.
Ambassador Singh’s earlier assignments demonstrate a balanced mix of field diplomacy and multilateral exposure. He served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Kabul from 2018 to 2020, a particularly sensitive posting that required close coordination on political, security, and development-related matters. Before Kabul, he was Deputy Chief of Mission in Berlin during 2016–2017, contributing to the strengthening of India–Germany strategic and economic ties.
From 2013 to 2016, Mr. Singh was posted as Counsellor (Political) at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, New York. During this period, he handled a wide range of complex political issues, including matters relating to India’s neighbouring countries, P-5 nations, UN Security Council affairs, peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, disarmament, humanitarian concerns, the Non-Aligned Movement, and Commonwealth affairs. He has represented India as a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2024, and 2025, underscoring his deep familiarity with multilateral diplomacy.
Ambassador Abhishek Singh joined the Indian Foreign Service in 2003. Following his foundational training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service, New Delhi, and the External Publicity Division of MEA, he was posted to the Embassy of India in Beijing from 2005 to 2010. This early exposure to China, combined with his later academic training in Mandarin, added a valuable dimension to his diplomatic skill set. On returning to headquarters in 2010, he worked as a Desk Officer handling India–Pakistan relations, and later served as Officer on Special Duty in the office of the Minister of State for External Affairs from 2011 to 2013.
Academically, Ambassador Singh graduated with top honours in Political Science from Hindu College, University of Delhi. He also holds a PGDM in Human Resources, completed an eighteen-month Mandarin language programme at the China Foreign Affairs University, Beijing, and pursued a Foreign Policy course at the Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University, Washington D.C.
Ambassador Singh is married to Ms. Meghna Singh, an International Educator, and the couple has two sons.
