AAI hosts 8th ICAO steering group meeting of Air Traffic Flow Management

Air Traffic Flow Management Steering Group was constituted by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) with an objective to address the air traffic flow capacity management (ATFCM) and form regulation to avoid exceeding flow of air traffic beyond the airport and air space capacity. The group meets regularly once in 2 years to study the manner in which the demand capacity imbalance could be addressed uniformly across the globe so that the airline community could optimize its operations consuming the delay on account of such capacity imbalance with least inconvenience to the travelling passengers.

The Eighth ICAO Steering Group meeting of Air Traffic Flow Management has commenced on 14th May, 2018 at Hotel Radisson Blu, Mahipalpur, New Delhi. Airports Authority of India (AAI) being the vibrant growing aviation market in the world decided to host the meeting in New Delhi. The objective of the meeting is to provide an efficient Air Traffic Management catering to the rapidly growing traffic volume.

The meeting was inaugurated by Shri A.K.Dutta, Member (Air Navigation Services), Airports Authority of India who in his inaugural address thanked Chairman, AAI Dr. Guruprasad Mohapatra for his dynamic leadership in implementing many of the Air Traffic Management (ATM) Projects viz Air Traffic Flow Management in the country continually working towards enhancing air traffic management performance, establishing new route structure, Futuristic Telecommunication Infrastructure (FTI) and pursuing active collaboration with defense for flexible use of airspace.

The commitment of India to ICAO’s objectives of performance based management strategies to achieve consistent improvements in the area of safety, efficiency, security and environment has been reiterated in the address wherein the remarkable progress made by AAI in establishing a nationwide ATFM system, contributed significantly towards development of Regional ATFM Framework facilitating harmonization of ATM services across the Asia Pacific Airspace has been stressed upon.

Mr. Shane Sumner, Secretary, Asia- Pacific Region, ICAO in his address appreciated the contribution of India in bringing out global guideline document for Air Traffic Flow Management (DOC-9971) and thanked Airports Authority of India for its initiative in hosting this prestigious international game changing event and for arranging a technical visit to the state of the art Central Air Traffic Flow Management-Command and Control Centre located at IGI, Palam Airport for gaining enormous insight knowledge in the manner the Air Traffic Flow across the nation is being managed in India.

The five day steering group meeting is attended by delegates from USA, China, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, , Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong China, Philippines, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Indonesia, Myanmar apart from various International Aviation organizations such as ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), IATA (International Air Transport Association), CANSO (Civil Air Navigation Services Organization), IFALPA (International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations) etc who are experts in developing Air Traffic Flow Management across the globe, deliberate various aspects of implementation of Air Traffic Flow Management, study the ongoing implementation of Air Traffic Flow Management in Asia Pacific Region, recommend for several improvements for global harmonization in Air Traffic Flow Management.
