In April 2023, Aadhaar holders in India carried out a total of 1.96 billion authentication transactions, reflecting a significant growth of over 19.3% compared to April 2022. This indicates the increasing usage of Aadhaar and the growth of the digital economy in the country. The majority of these transactions were conducted using fingerprint authentication, followed by demographic and OTP (one-time password) based authentications. Face authentication is also being widely used across various sectors to facilitate easy service delivery.

The adoption of Aadhaar among residents is near universal among the adult population, and the saturation level among all age groups has reached 94.8%. This highlights the widespread reach and acceptance of Aadhaar as an identification tool among the population. During April, more than 15.44 million Aadhaars were updated based on requests from residents.

The Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) is promoting financial inclusion, particularly for individuals at the bottom of the income pyramid. In April 2023, over 200.6 million last-mile banking transactions were facilitated through AePS and the network of micro ATMs.

Aadhaar e-KYC (Know Your Customer) service continues to play a crucial role in the banking and non-banking financial services sectors, providing transparent and improved customer experiences while facilitating ease of doing business. In April alone, more than 250.5 million eKYC transactions were conducted. The cumulative number of Aadhaar e-KYC transactions has exceeded 14.95 billion by the end of April 2023. The widespread adoption of e-KYC is significantly reducing the customer acquisition cost for entities such as financial institutions and telecom service providers, among others.

Whether it is e-KYC for identity verification, AePS for last-mile banking, authentication processes, or Aadhaar-enabled direct benefit transfers (DBT), Aadhaar serves as the foundation of India’s digital public infrastructure and supports Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of improving the ease of living for residents.
